If you haven't already read it, I'd suggest a careful perusal of https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-CPU-Roundup-AMD-Ryzen-3-AMD-Threadripper-2-Intel-9th-Gen-Intel-X-series-1535/ and https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Photoshop-CPU-Roundup-AMD-Ryzen-3-AMD-Threadripper-2-Intel-9th-Gen-Intel-X-series-1529/. While the differences are not huge, there can be a significant difference between the 3900X and i9-9900K depending on the content and work being done.

If you are considering an i9-9900K system

A 3900X system would differ in cpu and motherboard. The Asus Prime X570-Pro would be a good choice. An less expensive alternative would be the Asus TUF Gaming X570-Plus. On this platform one might also consider upgrading the NVMe storage to PCIe 4.0 M.2 drives. That would be a costly upgrade and I doubt it is worth the additional cost.

You are going to want a better board for that 9900K, especially if doing cpu intensive tasks. The VRM on the Asus Prime is terrible.

The VRM on the Asus Prime are not "terrible". If one intends on serious overclocking, it would be far from my first choice. But for a workstation board where reliability is far more important the motherboard is a reasonably good choice.

He is doing Video and Photo editing therefore he will be putting a load on the cpu. The Z390-A isn't worth the money when you can get the Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Elite for an extra $10, and not have to worry about the cpu thermal throttling.

Same performance but cheaper.

I removed the extra wifi card, unless you need it for something else ?

Much cheaper Ram. Not as nice as the Neo if you like RGB, but half the price.

Corsair MP510 gives you nearly twice the capacity over the 970 Pro for less money. Not sure if you need 2 x 1.92TB or not. Maybe use one as a scratch disk ?

Seagate Enterprise 10TB HDD seems better value over the 8TB Barracuda Pro. I am sure @seagate_surfer can advise what HDD would be best for Video editing though in terms of endurance.

Solid motherboard and cheaper 2080 Super which has 4 years warranty when registered.

Dark Rock Pro 4 is pretty much on par with the D15 for less cash.

The NZXT H500 doesn't have the best airflow. The Cooler Master H500 on the other hand does.

Swapped the psu to the HXi as it has multi rail/single rail config.

Oh man, that drive is an easy decision! Go for it, its performance it's outstanding. The other options are optimized more for like video racks where they use systems that are not Windows, security systems or streaming and recording systems, but he is gonns do video editions, I am sure this drive will deliver.

THoughts on the Memory? That Ripjaws doesn't say AMD on the G.Skill site. I can spend a couple hundred more for an approved memory. Thoughts @lee32uk ? ALso thanks for the wisdom!

They should work fine. Not all Ram appears on the QVL list anyway as there are just too many kits to test.

Gamersnexus has a piece on Ryzen 3000 memory. While the data is interesting, I found the comments in the introduction concerning QVL and motherboard BIOS settings quite illuminating.

Hit my first road block with the Dark Rock Pro 4 blocking the rear memory slot. Popped off the fan but still not fit. Going to take off the cooler and insert Ram first as it looks like it MAY fit but it will be tight. Really tight. Will I need to reapply Thermal paste when remounting the cooler if it works?

If it doesn't fit I guess I'll need a new cooler? Didn't show any compatibility issues in the PCPartPicker

You'll want to clean off the old thermal compound and apply new if you remove the cooler. You might try a dry fit before reapplying compound. If it is still too tight, you could try rotating the cooler 180 degrees. (You'll want to reverse the interior fan if you do.)

You should be able to move the front fan up a couple of mm. Is this the G.Skill Ripjaws V Ram ? If so it should fit under the cooler body as that should allow for 46.8mm and the Ripjaws is 42mm. The front fan allows for 40mm in it's default position, so if you adjust it up a touch it should go under.
