My aunt is looking for a way to carry a wifi signal 50 yards from her house to an outbuilding. A range extender or repeater seems like the obvious answer, and I have very little experience with those. It's only for basic computing, let's say 1080p YouTube at most, so no crazy speeds needed. Budget is "whatever gets the job done", but I know she's not made of money. I've told you all I know, but can go back to her if there's other info that would help. Thanks in advance

I enjoy buying junk and sinking more money than it's worth into it to make it less junk.

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Can you run a cable? Id try to just bury a cable

Id get something like a unifi nanobeam if you want wireless, its directional wifi, then put a ap on the other end. Something like this https://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B00JFQV6GC/ref=dp_olp_0?ie=UTF8&condition=all

A normal extender may work, but that distance will make it pretty slow so i wouldn't do that if you can.

Ya 200 feet of cat6 isn't very expensive either and it should just work without the need for doublers, I have some that long ran on our property.

While I agree. I wouldn't buy CCA wiring for that long of run. Secondly you need to use underground rated cabling unless your dropping  a conduit in the ground. Thirdly nothing about grounding the wire. Does aluminum or copper carry an electrical charge? Yes, then it has to be grounded. Only way around that is to use Fiber.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

I have the same 200ft Cat 6 cable running just fine, it's been outdoors in the elements for like 3 years now.

That being said, I still wouldn't run a Ethernet cable out doors without it being grounded. Its dangerous to do that. Ethernet cables can and do carry electricity. All fun and games until you get a lightning strike killing all your gear.

That seems horribly unlikely given all of the things taller than the thin shielded cable that's low to the ground.

Last time I checked. Lightning finds a path to ground. And when it does, it spreads out under the ground. So if you get a direct hit or its close enough. It could send an electrical charge thru the cabling. As last I check, Ethernet is a conductor. Of course you might be able to prevent this by putting the cabling in a Plastic conduit. But technical speaking, any conductor outside, Ariel or underground should be grounded.

I think she's going to live with the setup she has. Burying a cable or messing with setting up a second router for the Unifi to beam to both seem like more trouble than they're worth. Thanks for the suggestions.
