SSD vs SSHD

doomsriker

I just ordered a used ASUS Q304UA 2 in 1 laptop on eBay. The installed drive is a (likely slow) 1tb hard drive. I really want 2tb of storage and something that will be faster especially in terms of boot time. Should I go ahead and get this SSHD now

or should I make due with the slow hard drive for a bit, while I save up for this proper SSD? https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B07L31K2MK/ref=ox_sc_saved_image_6?smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER&psc=1

No to SSHD.

Ideally get a MLC or TLC based SSD, for example

Adata SU800 : https://www.amazon.com/ADATA-SU800-3D-NAND-Speed-ASU800SS-2TT-C/dp/B07GBRG2G8/

or

WD Blue 2TB : https://www.amazon.com/Blue-NAND-2TB-SSD-WDS200T2B0A/dp/B073SBRHH6/

Note you could also just pull out the optical drive and install a second SSD in its place.

You can buy "covers" for the optical drive from eBay for a few dollars and probably even adapter trays (fake optical drive cases with screw places for hard drive) but even if you don't find one, you could probably use double sided adhesive tape to "glue" the 2nd SSD in place and prevent it from moving around.

Search for "asus optical drive cover" for example.

Here's some example of adapter things:

these are 9.5mm tall ... it's standard height, there's a thicker 12.7mm size but yours is probably the standard thin one considering the sata drive sits on top of the optical drive.

in my experience, SSHDs were not different than a regular HDD, slow as hell with some marketing fluff added. Either get an SSD or don't bother
