My Interest in Professional Sports is Dead

leo1798

I grew up with a culture of sports around me from the earliest times that I can remember. My parents signed me up for American Football at the age of 4 and I played until I was 17 adding many sports in-between such as Soccer/Football, Wrestling, Baseball, Track & Field, Basketball, etc. During this time I was also obsessed with professional sports both national and international, watching many games and events, watching highlights, reading about athletes, teams, analytics, etc. I maintained some interest going into university despite stopping organized sports, but such has been gradually declining over the past few years up until now where I'm utterly indifferent to such at 21. I still exercise and play casual games very often, but I was so happy to be done with organized sports after high school due to sustaining repeated injuries and I just haven't looked back. Honestly I'm much happier with my new hobbies and interests that I consider far more productive, but the only issue that I ever have is not being able to keep up with the sports banter of many friends and family, although this isn't the end of the world. Any thoughts or similar experiences?

Nothing wrong with that, as you said if exercise elsewhere it's not really productive at the end of the day.

I used to do JV swim in my high school days, but nowadays, I have absolutely zero interest in doing organized swim. There's no way I can sustain multiple high-speed bursts without breathing like my lungs have deflated.

I never had that much interest in sports. Sure, I played some in the Middle and High School, but after I went off to college my interest fell to zero. I don't watch sports at all and would be lucky to even watch the Superbowl. Now, I'm into my 30s and am pretty much the only guy in my circle of friends that doesn't have any idea what's going on in the realm of sports. No regrets btw, I have other hobbies. Though I have been told that by not having an interest in sports, it's rather abnormal for an American thirty something male.

I've done baseball as a kid, and I did track when I was in high school. That was fun, but I'm old now, and I don't have time for sports. But I do go walking on trails and that around town.

I've gone the other way. Grew up relatively alone with my 'nerdy' interests, high school and NZ culture in general is very big on the Rugby etc. I've had eye problems from birth which made my depth perception absolute trash, so anything that required me to hit or catch something was a nightmare. Slow runner, worst in PE class etc. So yeah sport wasn't fun at all. I also got exposed online to the very loud anti-sports rhetoric from certain other 'nerds' who were probably bullied or had nightmare gym classes. Felt a bit of solidarity with them but that crowd merged into the same one that has somewhat questionable views of women, which as a woman, I find p gross.

But now I love it. Hockey, rugby, cricket, Olympics etc. I watch a lot more than I play but I love going swimming, hiking, playing the odd social game of touch rugby, cricket or softball etc. I definitely wish there hadn't been as much of a divide between groups and interests when I was growing up, because sports are awesome (except American football which is turd). Knowing enough for small talk about sports while travelling has been more useful than I expected too.
