Some schools have a program st up to provide their students with a free office license. Have you looked into that?

 

after that, libreOffice or OpenOffice are free and legal alternatives, with file inter compatibility if memory serves.

Check with your school to see if they provide any student licenses for Office. Otherwise look at LibreOffice, it's a free alternative to the Office suite.

Does it HAVE to be office?  Google docs is largely compatible at least for data entry and free...

School license or an open source Office alternative (LibreOffice) or free Office alternative (Google Docs/Sheet/Slides) would likely be your best bet.

I think this is a part of their Microsoft Home Use Program. Students can generally sign up for free if their school is enrolled in the Office 365 Education program. Check your eligibility here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/education/products/office?ms.officeurl=students
