Difference between console 30fps and pc 30fps?

So i used to be a console gamer for the majority of my childhood so, obviously, i was used to playing games at 30 fps. Now i play on PC and if i lock my fps at 30 its nearly unplayable. Why is this? is it because ive gotten used to higher FPS? Or is it because the fps is able to go over 30 but cant because its locked?

Just let your fps run freely in pc’s unless you have tearing or other issues.

All ya' gotta do is load up the same game you're locking at 30 on PC on a console. You'll then get the answer you're looking for.

Console games tend to be highly tuned because developers know exactly what to expect. So they can get their games to run consistently within a certain time frame at certain times in a refresh cycle.

Games running on PC on the other hand do not get this luxury because developers can't know what to expect. They may have a range of hardware they tested on but that's it. Even if you lock down the FPS, that doesn't necessarily mean things are consistent. The only way to to get consistency is to make sure your setup can exceed the target frame rate and use VSync.

I was just playing The Crew (Which doesn't even have in game settings for anisotropic filtering) and have it locked to 30. It's unoptimized and shits the bed if you lock it to 60. If I play in fullscreen everything looks fine, but if I use borderless window even though it's still 30fps it visually looks very choppy and stuttery, regardless of VSync on or off.

So that's a big issue. If you look at DF's videos on things like Forza, the frame pacing is perfect, so even though it's running at 30 it's still smooth and consistent, which is the key. 30fps is 100% playable, and I don't start to actually exceptionally notice things looking choppy until about 24, provided the frame pacing is good.

Conversely, I have a 144 Hz monitor, and even some games reporting 70-90fps will still look and feel like 20. For me, this is Assetto Corsa in triple screen. Any time I drive around a corner it looks like a slideshow, despite Steam, Shadowplay, and Afterburner all saying I'm getting at least 70fps. I mean, this isn't just some BS "it feels bad" it's literally like looking at something playing back at 15-20fps.

I completely understand what you are talking about. Yeah some games just run better when they are lower fps. Like skyrim its locked at 60 but if you use mods to unlock it the game shits the bed. Haha

Similarly, I was playing The Witcher 3 to see how much fps I get after getting a 2080ti. On max settings I get 120 - 160fps (1080p). When it drops down to 120 it feels like absolute shit even though it's still 120 fps. Which is far beyond playable. It's really annoying.

The Crew was only designed to do 30 and freaks out if you go higher. Assetto Corsa genuinely seems to have 10 frames show the exact same image.

Something I find interesting is Halo 1 on PC has no framrate cap, while Halo 2 is capped to 60. You can do some things to unlock it, but apparently certain physics things start to break.

I played the Witcher 3 at around ~40fps and it seemed fine to me. I could buy that some people are more sensitive to it. I can kind of see the difference between 30 and 60, but honestly above that, it's pretty whatever. It really comes down to frame times and frame pacing. I'd look into the Witcher because I haven't seen anyone else complain about that.

^^^ Extremely consistent frametimes are probably what gives consoles the edge at 30fps, that and tearing issues with most PC monitors. If you have FreeSync or G-Sync with a range that goes down to 30Hz then you can get rid of that for the most part, V-Sync set to half refresh on a 60Hz monitor may help too.

Other than that it'll vary from game to game, I've found Assassin's Creed Odyssey to be perfectly playable at 25-45fps because the frametimes were extremely consistent (I was running a 4.54Ghz X5670 and 1080 Ti).
