Ryzen 5 3600X and PBO overclocking question

Hey guys, 

 

So I recently got myself a Ryzen 5 3600x, paired it with 16GB DDR4 3600 ram, an MSI MPG X570 Gaming Plus mobo, and a Cooler Master MasterLiquid 240 AiO.

 

Right out of the gate, no tweaking (other than XMP on the RAM), everything is great, the CPU is a beast! No overclocking the chip done by me, just leaving it on the default settings, and under load, it runs at 4.3ghz constantly and averaging around 55c for the temp. 

 

I downloaded Ryzen Master, and attempted to just turn PBO on so see what kinds of boost it gives me... well the answer to that is none! (less if anything)

 

I turned on PBO and did some gaming, and was noticing it was not boosting over 4.2 ghz, and averaging around 65c for temps. ?? /shrug

 

Am I doing something wrong when just enabling PBO in Ryzen Master, or do I have a chip that just doesn't want to be overclocked manually? (I have watched the LTT video where Anthony explains it all) but am just not sure why PBO does not give me an increase.

Enable both PBO and autoOC?

 

Tho it's not surprising since there's very little clock gain on Zen 2 with oc in general

It's by no means comprehensive, but my testing of various settings suggests that lowering Vcore using negative offset helps with boost clocks more than pretty much anything (to a point)

 

PBO pretty much just gives the chip more voltage, which causes it to increase in temperature, which in turn makes it boost to lower frequencies.

 

I suggest you look at boost clocks with PBO explicitly disabled in BIOS.

 

Lastly, rumor has it MSI BIOS is broken and so the CPUs don't boost correctly (don't know if it's still the case though)

Thanks for the suggestions guys. Progrees so far...

 

I have tried autoOC on in Ryzen Master and PBO on in the BIOS, still wont boost above 4.2 and jumped temps to around 80c, so no joy there.

 

Next, I left autoOC on in Ryzen Master, but disabled PBO explicitly in the BIOS, and lowered my VCore voltage down from 1.4v (stock) to about 1.35v, and it is boosting to 4.3 with temps staying in the 60c range. But this is still not better than stock, lol

 

Going to fiddle with it some more, but thanks for pointing me in the right direction! Cheers!

 

**EDIT** 

Side note... I am noticing that Ryzen Master is reporting different voltages than CPU-Z and HWMonitor, and even in MSI Dragon Center... I dont know if I trust Ryzen Master...

I'm finding the best performance by not using Ryzen master at all. I enable PBO in the bios. I'm finding that with Ryzen Master, my cpu voltage is through the roof, which raises temps and lowers boost clocks.

 

i haven't really had time to experiment, but in the meantime, I leave PBO enabled in the bios and that's all.

Yea, I am not going to be using Ryzen Master anymore.

 

I did some manual overclocking last night with some decent success. 

 

I disabled PBO in the BIOS to ensure that nothing was going to boost over top of my overclock, made sure my XMP profile was set for 3600, turned off AMD Cool n Quiet, then after some tuning, got a stable 4.4ghz on all cores, 1.38 volts, and very good temps (~55c - 65c when gaming)

 

I was able to get it up to 4.5ghz, but was taking 1.42 volts which spiked the temp up to 80c ish, and would crash occasionally. So no go for that, but im happy with a steady 4.4ghz.
