CPU lifespan ?

Some people say cpus last like 20 years... That seems a little execive. Anyhow, how long do you think my i7 8700k would survive? 

Had it for 1 year already, no problems. Never overclocked. 

I'm thinking about overclocking it + delidding. To like 5Ghz. And I hope it lasts for at least 5 years. What do you think ?

Bare minimum is a decade even with sane overclocking.

One of two things will happen.

First and most likely by 30 country miles, is one day you'll get a nocpu bios error.

Second is that you'll get extremely poor performance and/or frequent crashes.

 

I've only ever had a one CPU just die. It was a Pentium 1.

our family athlon 2800+xp  pc still working or 10 years, the thing that gave out was the motherboard capacitors which we retired that pc

Ahh I see okay. I do believe this one will last a long time however. I hope so at least.

My i7 6700k started causing random, inconsistent BSODs all over the place, even when not under load or just idling at the desktop. I swapped it out with an old Celeron chip and everything was fixed. I can only assume the cpu was dying or "broken".

You are much more likely to have capacitors or VRMs on the motherboard fail than the CPU fail.

Not that it can't happen but the CPU isn't the most likely part to down a system.

There are still tons of computer from the 70's and 80's that function fine.

 

The CPU will mostly likely outlive it's usefulness window by quite a bit.

20 years easy.  You will use your 8700K for 5 years, then put it on a shelf.  Come back 15 years later and make a "retro" machine and it'll fire right up.

 

Or you can put it into a file server or Plex type machine for 15 years after upgrading, and it'll chug along no problem.

 

20 years isn't a long time for electronics.  Check with audiophiles and their gear, some date back before Vietnam era.

Overclock, yes.  I can't speak to delidding, as I have never done it and not looked into it seriously.  I don't know what ripping the CPU apart can impact, even the tiniest bit can alter things over 20 years.  I've gone in to look at things in a few electronics of mine and I just feel like once you mess around things aren't 100.00000000% the same ever again.

 

I'd leave it alone and just do 5GHz.

My Athlon MP 2000+ system still works perfectly.

 

I'd expect my board to go bad in some way, as you mentioned, long before the CPUs crap out on me.

The 8700K will hit 5.0GHz fairly easily without issue.  What cooler are you using?

Yeah 20 years sounds about right. The vast majority of old systems don't work due to other failures (PSU, Motherboard, HDD, etc). The CPU can certainly die, but it's likely to last an excessive amount of time.

 

Now, granted, delidding and then OCing your CPU will almost certainly negatively affect it's longevity - it should still last many years (assuming you don't cook it by OCing unsafely), but it will likely die earlier than it otherwise would.

I would say no delidding!!

Go for the simple OC

Intel boost + if your Motherboard have "enchant turbo", it OC all cores to the turbo boost frequency

Electromigration happens because of high current, which OC will induce to some level. It will drive power usage up progressively, until the CPU cannot function anymore.

 

A very high current, for example, will kill a CPU in a fractions of a second. A moderate overclock will reduce the lifespan of the material by an unknown amount of time.

 

There is no way to calculate the lifespan because no one knows the exact durability of the material as each processor is unique.

Go into BIOS and see if you can set a CPU profle for the 8700K at 5GHz.

But how much can it differ.. Like 1-2% every 10th chip.

I don't know how to overclock sir. You mean like a normal 5Ghz profile without Ocing?

Correct.  There should be a profile in your BIOS where you set CPU timings and multipliers, etc.  Very similar to the XMP profile for memory.

 

The CPU will ramp up to 5GHz on all cores under load, and ramp down when idle.  The days of running your CPU at max OC 24/7 are behind us (I'm looking at you e4300).
