Slow seek time My computer NAS

0x1e

Hello all,

I've had a problem for quite some time and it has finally got on my last nerve,

Since adding a NAS to my network (Western Digital My Cloud Home) for weekly backups my explorer has become very slow, laggy and crashing.

The computer works fine, browsing my files works, transfers work (to a point), everything work. However if I click My computer (Windows key + E) to view all my drives the the problem shows 70% of the time.

I have to wait forever for the drives to show, and while I wait explorer.exe freezes. It seems as if Windows 10 is having trouble finding the NAS and waits to find it before doing anything else. If I go to Z directly (using Windows key + R, then z:/) then all is good.

Now the second problem is worse and why I'm here.

If I am transferring files to the NAS then nothing I do will allow me to use Windows explorer. Doesn't matter if it's My computer, My documents, music and so on. It freezes the whole thing.

I am thinking that it's the program that I use (Cobian Backup 11) and I'm wondering if anyone has used this program before. It works perfectly and does everything I need.

Thank you in advance.

TL;DR

Freezes when seeking for the NAS,

Freezes when doing back ups.

It's not a race to the bottom.

Is both the NAS and network switch/router using the latest firmware? The My Cloud Home should automatically push the latest version though. If it's not for some reason that may be what's causing problems.

Are you using WD Discovery? The WD Drive Utilities might help.

Try using a different ethernet cable. Also, check your firewall settings or antivirus software to make sure it's not trying to scan before accessing.

Thank you for the reply,

I will check it all when I get back home from work and let you know.
