So basically I was just doing a normal gaming session and from nowhere I heated this loud pop and everything just turned off. Just when this happened I smelled something burning so I knew it was the psu. Although this has never happened to me before. So I'm kind of scared that all of my other components just got fried. Anyone have any experience with this kind of stuff? I'm in need of some serious help.

You should be fine. I see a lot of blown PSU's and they pop before anything else goes bad.

Unplug it from the wall, wait a minute or two for some residual power to drain and remove it from the system.

You should be able to smell a funky electrical smell from it.

Maybe you had a crappy PSU or you had one with not enough watts?

EDIT: A nonbrand PSU. That explains it. Never use those in a computer you care about.

Yeah its a pretty shitty one I would imagine.. So I should just buy a new one and hope for the best? Any recommendations for good brands? I don't want this to happen again

Read up on johnny guru, but since you're using a generic PSU, I'm guessing you're looking for something value oriented? I would suggest the Corsair TX or RM series or Seasonic's G Series or Silverstone' Strider Gold.

It was this nonbranded that came with my case.

imo its alwasy best to get a name brand psu. ex. corsair, bequiet, coolermaster

if you are reading this you are wasting valuable time and should maybe rethink your life choices.

Also use one of the many wattage calculators to get a rough idea of what your power supply needs are (just about every manufacturer uses a variation of the same one). If you're looking to max out rated efficiency, it's best to get more power than you need. The 80 Plus efficiency tests are rated based on 50% load, but you can fudge it a bit since the efficiency doesn't change drastically on a good unit with a higher load. I also recommend perusing JonnyGuru. It is a great and well-respected resource for all consumer power supply reviews.

This happened to me about  a month ago ,makes you really nervous and i had to wait 2 weeks until i could get another PSU (CX750M) , luckily the only thing that blew was my PSU , you should be ok , but never trust cheap PSU's

Your stuff should be mostly fine other than the most likely dead PSU. The pop you heard would most likely be the blown PSU fuse (don't try replacing it, you could get electrocuted from the charged capacitors) . If you smelled burning, check your mobo and other parts for charred marks to see if they lived through it.

Awesome, you keep learning.

I call you lucky if you get out for not frying other components, never cheap out on PSU.

Reminds me of my other build, the only thing I saw after OC is a huge blue spark that slammed the wall.

What components in your system?

80+ ratings certify electrical efficiency. Not quality.

Yep, I have had one do that before,  fortunately I didn't loose anything else.

Basically if your PSU is a cheap generic unit then it is like the lottery if you'll get one that will keep going or blow up.

If I buy/obtain a unit with a no name/generic PSU then the first thing I do is replace it with a base model Antec or Coolermaster unit. It's worth the $60 to not risk damage to other parts.
