New Home Game Server

Good Afternoon and Happy Weekend to Everyone!

My wife and I are building a new house and I had a few plans for the network and hosting game servers.

Main games that we play:

Ark Survival Evolved

ATLAS

Skyrim Together

Raft (I believe this one is irrelevant, since the game has no hosting functionality)

Also plan to set up massive storage for networked backups and media servers.

Budget isn't necessarily a problem, but hoping to get the best bang for my buck.

Internet speeds are 1 Gbps down and 100 Mbps up.

Thanks in advance for your help.

P. S. Yes, I do have a dedicated server room ;)

P. P. S. I already have a server rack for ease of setup.

New or used?

How much storage do you want?

Id personally get a used server like a dell r720, but for new, a ryzen 5 or 7 based system would be a good option.

Also, up to 10-ish TB storage.

Might even want to set up a steam cache.

probably overkill for what your doing, I don't think you need the extra cpu power, and the 3900x isn't slow either.

You can get 64gb and probably more on normal am4

Should be enough io for 10gbe+ hba + something else don't think you need the extra io

Thats not that much, Id just get a few big ssds for the game server vms, and a pair of 10tb hdds for storage.

Would this also be a decent option: https://www.ebay.com/itm/Dell-Poweredge-R410-2-X-SIX-CORE-2-40GHZ-E5645-64GB-RAM-2TB-SERVER-QTY-AVAILABLE/352521213716?hash=item5213e6d714:g:FysAAOSwh2xYAR-N

And just add larger HDD's?

What would be the minimum amount of RAM you'd recommend for my application?

more is better id go 32gb if you can, used ddr3r is pretty cheap, Id probably go 128 cause its not much more.

Really depends on amount of players and if you wanna run it all at the same time.

Also, I know this isn't necessarily the right place for it, but could you recommend a decently priced rack-mounted router? Not looking for 10Gb yet, though.

what do you want in a router?

For a midrange router for that network, id probaby get something like this https://www.amazon.com/Ubiquiti-EdgeRouter-4-Port-Gigabit-ER-4-US/dp/B078PGCGN2

Might need to buy rack mounts seprate

I have messed with UBQT products and have had more problems than I care to mention.

I'd like something that doesn't need a lot of setup.

those are pretty low setup routers.

What issues have you had with unifi? They have been pretty solid for me

Could also go mikrotik like this guy https://www.amazon.com/Mikrotik-RB3011UIAS-RM-RouterBOARD-10xGigabit-Ethernet/dp/B01EL7TF9E

Or could make a pf sense box from a old server.

It's hard to describe.

I had a UBQT AP Pro that was always needing to be reset.

thats gonna be a pain.

How much performance do you want per user?

Hmmm. I might forgo the Gaming VMs. I'm prob gonna run dedicated servers only, I have enough PC's and extra hardware for some pretty decent gaming pc's.

I'm mainly gonna only run dedicated servers for ARK, ATLAS, and Skyrim Together.

Would also really like to set up a steam cache for when friends come over and wanna bring their gaming laptops.

Most of my friends game over internet and are tired of those MMO's having trolls and jerks online, so we could really use our own servers and using hosting companies can get really expensive. Especially with Atlas, since you have to pay for a server grid and it can add up to about 200-300 a month.

Skyrim Together is pretty easy once you get port forwarding set up properly.

Alos, having your own dedicated servers are pretty handy, since my friend and I have a YT Gaming channel and we have friends hop in for recordings and faff about pretty often.
