How to transport a 27" monitor on an international flight

Does anyone know what the best way is to transport a 27" monitor on an international flight?

I have the original packaging, but that is rather large and would fill a whole checked bag.

I have considered some options, but still am not sure about them.

  1. bring on board (to big really)
  2. wrap around clothes and put into checked bag - (might get damaged?)
  3. check as special item (costly $100 or so)
  4. sell and buy a new one once at destination (time consuming and I will lose money)
  5. don't bring a monitor and just use the laptop monitor alone and maybe loose productivity

Thanks

i would suggest option 2, wrapping it with alot of soft clothes, maybe consider bubble wrapping it too, and putting extra padding at the corners of the monitor. Also try to pack your luggage as tightly as possible as that will minimise the movement of the monitor within the luggage.

yeah, I think that is the best option, I am only a little worried since the monitor costs $400 and I can't easily afford a replacement

if you are really worried about damaging it and cant really afford a replacement, i would suggest you just not bring it imo.

You can also consider option 4 especially if you are heading to the location for a long period of time

I used to work for a moving company during the summers and option 2 is exactly what we would do with monitors that would fit in clothing boxes. I would put it face down on some clothes since the back of luggage is usually more rigid. Make sure you pack the corners really well. You can roll up some T-shirts and cramp them in the corners between the monitor and the walls of the luggage.

Maybe wrap it in some bubble wrap to avoid rubbing on the screen during transport. Don't pack the clothes too super tight, or they will become really solid and transfer all of the energy of bumps to the monitor.

Ok, got it. I will try to find the right balance for the tightness.

Thanks for your help!

I would suggest a hybrid of 1 & 2. Don't put in in a checked bag. Put it in a carryon bag. You can control the handling and orientation of the bag at all times and you won't have to worry about it getting thrown or tossed.

I ended up putting a cheaper 1080p monitor in my checked bag wrapped with bubble wrap, a towel and t-shirts. It worked perfectly! Maybe next time I will try it with my other monitor. Thanks to everyone for helping me and others who stumble upon this page transport monitors safely!

The monitor (in a box) is larger than most airlines allow in carry on, and if they do allow it it will be the first item tossed in the cargo hold if the plane is full and they run out of space. The problem you could encounter is if everyone up to the gate says carry on is fine, you have the monitor in your hands, about to board and suddenly the crew says you need to check the monitor or be unloaded from the flight, what do you do then?

If you get on the plane with it then the problem comes when you try to put it in the overhead bin, it wont fit, and you can't put it under your seat for the same reason. If you could get it to fit in the overhead bin then it will be the only item in there, but there are other people that need to share the bin, so they will push, shove and dump things on top and around it to get their space...after the bashing around of your item the crew will then remove it from the cabin and put it in the hold any way, only without labels.

I know this thread is old as hell but I felt like adding to it in case someone stumbles upon it looking for a newer solution.... There is a company that makes monitor/TV specific carry cases available on amazon for not a whole lot of $$. Look up gator cases, they range from around 20 in all the way to 55. They also have hard plastic cases with wheels!!!

One suggestion please check with destination customs. Some countries may charge you more than cost of buying new.
