Simple question. If I currently have a old PC with windows 10 on it and am looking to build a new PC from scratch, do I need purchase a whole new version of windows 10? Or could I just "transfer" it from my old PC to my new one? Stupid question I know, but I've never built a PC before lol.

Thanks a bunch!

JW

Sign into your microsoft account on your current pc and register that windows installation to it.

When you build your new one, you can sign into your account there and register your windows 10 through the same key

And that's all above board? Like there is no need for me to buy a $113 windows usb key thing?

You can create a bootable windows usb with their tool. You just need an 8GB flash drive.

When you go to a store you're not paying for the usb, you're paying for the key.

Lol yeah I just worded it wrong. I know you're paying to the key I just think I wasted money when I ordered the usb key. I didn't know you could transfer my current key to a new computer. Hopefully Amazon will let me return it. (I haven't even received it yet, its in the mail still)

It's not dumb question, it's just question that thousands other people asked before you and you can easily find answer on this forum, without even using search field.

Not that I don't want to help, but this forum becomes more like live chat support.

Yea totally above board. Microsoft Provide all the tools you need. If you are concerned then give them a call. Part of buying a license is included support, and they'll walk you through the steps of transferring your license. (the steps are also available on their website)

sorry for intruding, if you register your new pc with your old key, then what happened to the old pc? will it get blocked or something?

It gets deactivated and you get Windows nagging you about it. If its older version (Win7/8/.1), then after 30-days it locks almost completely. Win10 is less aggressive.
