Posted July 14, 2019 Hi guys, serious question time: I have the i7 5930K on Intel's X99 platform and I'm thinking about upgrading whole rig to 3900X + X570. This would cost me about 2700€ (CPU + MOBO + RAM + 4.0 SSD + water cooling upgrade) or I could just grab a i7 6950X (10c/20t OC about 4.2-4.4 GHz on all cores) for something like 500€. On paper Ryzen 9 is (much) better but I'm not sure if is it better enough to justify the difference in price. What would you do? CPU, Mobo and Ram is only like 750-800 + Ram config. CPU alone is 580-600€ and I will not buy a lower tier X570 mobo. I need to change the ram because right now I have 8*8GB so I need to buy a 4*16 kit to keep 64GB. Yes I'm running a custom loop but with the switch/upgrade I will do a small modification to my CPU loop the price is included in both values. Not able to hold on for 2 years untill intel 10/7nm and AM5? Tho honestly, getting into a new plattform isnt a bad idea instead of sinking more into your current one. For only 33% more core count, and hence 0% gain in single thread and 33% gain in multithread work? Not really. See how the 9900k beat the 5960X? The 3900X is about that level if not higher. If you want to be cheaper, you could wait for the 16 core 3950X to take away 3900X's flagship status and buy the 12 core then, or pick up one that's used for not very long. Ok, still a difficult choice since if you go for the CPU only upgrade, everything will work as it is now with minimal effort, but I'm not sure on the value of that route in performance terms. Are there any similar Xeons that could be a possibility too? No OC in that case, but but another option. Clean start to current Ryzen would be a more obvious jump with some potential upgrade path. It doesn't sound like the stuff you do is that demanding so it would probably suffice, but also consider waiting a little to see what they do with Zen 2 Threadrippers. Personally I wouldn't consider AMD CPUs before Zen 2 today. Also AI training even if it's running of the GPU is still heavily depending on the CPU. Also yes, TR3 is a option but there are no news/leaks about it so far. Tell me the specs and I might buy it something else you could consider though is 2nd gen TR, just a mobo and cpu and recycle the ram. still be a great upgrade and if price is an issue you can either get a low bined cpu or just 2nd hand one. this option will be even better if the platform is compatible with 3rd gen TR as you can just swap out a cpu later also you might be able to trade your ram for a 4x16gb kit as well fyi.
