i have a nice little 256gb flashdrive that i would like to be able to format because the data must have been corrupted. I keep getting a write protected error that i cant get rid of. do you guys have any advice on how to fix this issue? I tried some command prompt thing a while ago, that should have removed the write protection but it didn't work.

You could try with Linux, but I have a feeling that the drive has gone bad and has locked itself to protect you from writing to it.

BE SURE YOU HAVE THE RIGHT DRIVE BEFORE DOING THIS!!! THIS UTILITY WILL NUKE THE DRIVE WITH ZERO CONFIRMATION MESSAGES ONCE YOU TELL IT TO DO SO!!!

Try using diskmgmt from cmd. Here's a guide: https://www.seagate.com/support/kb/how-to-diskpart-eraseclean-a-drive-through-the-command-prompt-005929en/

You can fix it. It's a common thing (especially on cheaper noname drives) for them to go to read only mode.

You can potentially save it by identifying type of flash and controller used by using chipgenius (or you can just crack it open and read off the main chip).

Once you have that, find the appropriate MPTool. There a great russian site (usbdev.ru) that hosts such tools. Once you have the correct version of mptool, you can reprogramm the drive to factory state.
