I am looking at putting either the Noctua NH-U12S or the Noctua NH-D9L on an i5 4690k @4.2-4.5 with the possible upgrade in two to three years (probably to a 4790k).

I am using the HAF XB EVO and will be putting a custom loop on my GPU but will be using air on the cpu. I will use the front and back for rads. I tinker with encoding, do school work, and game on this machine. I don't want to go any bigger, and I want to leave the 360mm rad space for the gpu only.

The D9L strikes my fancy because it is small, but I would think the U12S gives better cooling. Let me know what you think.

Thanks for your time.

I'd vote for the NH-12S, because it's larger. The 95mm model might be a bit stressed by a 4790k.

Screwdriver specs: Long, pointy. Turns things. Some kind of metal.

With good chassis airflow the NH-D9L keeps both of my 16 core 2698v3's under 70°C full load. A 4790K would run just fine with it. Even allow some overclocking.

The NH-U12S is considerably better.

Why are you looking at these two coolers in particular?

I have had good experiences with their fans and coolers. They are also pretty quiet, compared to some.

There are other quiet and well performing alternatives that are arguably a better value in terms of asking price.

If you care more about the peace of mind from Noctua's products in regards to longevity and customer service, they're are hard to go wrong with.

It's not only that, but the size/noise. Because of how the tubing/fittings will be set, I need the room. Otherwise I'd go with a big @$$ cooler like the D15s

The HAF XB Evo has plenty of clearance for tall coolers -- up to 180mm. There are plenty of tall and slim coolers similar to the NH-U12S that are often better performing while being similarly priced or cheaper.

The Kotetsu, Ashura, and TS-140 Power are similar / better alternatives with a similar footprint.

Thank you.

Do you know if the fans are just as quiet or could I easily swap a noctua fan on to it?
