2990wx Server Memory Compatibiliy

Hello! This is my first post, so if i'm breaking any rules or posting at the wrong place, please let me know! Also, English is not my first language, so sorry in advance.

Ok, so I have a problem and can't find the answers for it. I need to build a "server" to do some heavy load processing. I was looking into 2990wx with 128gb ram for this.

What I ended up finding was that AMD seems to be picky for memory, which is kind of a problem, because I need to fill all the 8 dimms. So, what I'm trying to understand is, if incompatible: the ram modules will work but at a lower speed than announced? Or the system won't even boot?

The first problem I can deal with, the second is a big issue since I can't return the Ram sticks if they don't work.

Thanks in advance.

What motherboard are you planning to use? That will have a greater impact on what memory you can and can't have a lot more than the CPU will.

I can't say for sure how the memory will be affected, memory problems can vary system to system.

I was looking into the "Asus Rog Strix X399-e" or "Asus Rog Zenith Extreme Alpha". I don't really need any features of the more expensive one, but I've seen some people recommend it for the 2990wx.

Can you please tell us the ECC RAM you got ?  Grab a ECC kit.  AMD is not picky, AMD just takes advantage of high Mhz memory in a way Intel does not!

I'm not getting ECC RAM. I've been looking mostly into two kinds of kits, one is something like CMK128GX4M8X3800C19 (128GB, 3800Mhz, C19), the others are some plain low speed RAM kits (which are MUCH cheaper) like 4 x HX424C15FBK2/32 (32GB, 2400MHz, C15).

I'm afraid the much cheaper ones might not work at all, or the more expensive ones only work at half the speed.

Memory that are "server" branded usually talking about ECC in it.

It's not gonna be a "server" per say, it's more like a workstation shared by 3 people. We don't really need ECC on it.

But do you think that by using ECC ram we would have less chance of compatibility problems?

For the Zenith Extreme Alpha it seems the best compatible with G.Skill Flare X modules of 2933 mhz , not cheap but could be worth much if it run solid.

The QVL list is very outdated sadly, so watching tons of reviews will help choose the best, lots of modules on the QVL are old and not on the market anymore.
