Hello, so Air have oc my i5 9600k to 5ghz and 1.350 v running at a stable GHz in all cores but when I start stress testing it skyrockets to 78c and peaks at 82 c. After 1 minute it cools down to the mid 60s and after 2 minutes it skyrockets again. Is it bad and can I lower the voltage a bit to get better temps. Mobo I'm using is msi z390 gaming x

What cooler do you use?

In general, 82C is still fine, although that voltage is quite high for Intel chip.

I use a crappy water cooler from CoolerMaster. I think it is the ml120 rgb something. Should I lower the voltage and see what it does to like 1.320?. I've heard that the i5 9600k needs a lot of voltage to run at 5ghz compared to the i9 9900k for example. Correct me if I'm wrong

1.35v is still fine being honest, you should only worry past it, the maximum an Intel CPU should ever operate at is usually on the 1.4v margin.

Temperatures are really high though and that's probably why it's using more voltage to maintain 5ghz, the ML120 by Cooler Master is indeed garbage and I'd advise switching to a decent air cooler if you want to stick to 5ghz.

Is the cooling stable or does that also turn up/down ?

If it does then change your fan profile

EIther way I believe 85 is while high, still within tolerance.

If you think it's too high then change your cooling parameters or lower the OC.

Also, what software do you use for temperature monitoring?

Temps shouldn't jump around like that under stable load UNLESS chip downclocks.

But  yeah, try to check how things are at 1.32v. You shouldn't need that much more voltage to reach 5 Ghz compared to 9900k, unless you got pretty bad chip. Also, you can temporarily increase fan speed to 100% and observe how temperatures act in such scenario.

On average, yes 9600k aren't as good of an overclocker as the 9900k or even 9700k. However it's not a lot of difference.

Chip didn't downcloack and usage was 100% at all times which is weird. It could be the fan kicking up because my pc during the stress test was being a bit louder than normal. Also how do I increase fan speeds temporarily?

I'd first check if your fan is actually causing the temps to go up/down in a 2 min cycle.

Once you have confirmed that go to your bios and look for fan controls, usually hidden in a hardware menu.

Also, this might be a silly question but are you sure your correctly applied the cool paste?

My fan is causing the temps because when it Ramos up I stay closer to 65c but when it goes silent I get 82c under full load. Also  yea I correctly applied my thermal paste ?
