A couple days ago, my cat pissed on my computer. Sadly, I did not do a thorough rinsing of the motherboard and it causes a part of the pcb lane near the ram slot to bust.

Resultantly, I was forced to upgrade to an Asus z390i and a 8600k. (yes, I know Ryzen 3000 series is almost here... and the new intel  ..but I need a new computer asap.)  Now my here is my question, which ddr4 ram do you recommend?

This is really tricky because I heard that the true speed of the ram is MHZ/ CAS latency.

As such, some 3200/3600 are actually faster than their overpriced 4000+ models with very relaxed timing.

So here are my questions:

1) Is my understanding of true ram speed correct?

true ram speed = MHZ/ CAS latency

2) Please recommend me a ram for gaming. I do very little editing.

For instance, I've notice that beyond 3200mhz, there is only insignificant gain in FPS that cannot justify its extra $100  price tag.

Also, the ram needs to be compatible with my asus strix 390i and nh-u14s cooler.

Thanks in advanced!

T-Force Vulcan 3200Mhz is usually best value at about $75-80ish

G.Skill Ripjaws V is another option, also pretty cheap at sub-$90

You're pretty much right on the true speed of RAM, Its usually a good mix of high clocks and low timing. I would say for Ryzen though your RAM clock is going to have a bigger difference than your timings. That being said RAM that's always good to go with is Corsair Dominator sticks, if you can fit the bill that is, they usually are a little on the pricey side.

for intel i'd go for any 3000/3200 kit with a good price, however if you are in the US, i'd buy gskill for the warranty (they actually ship out new sticks)
