Need help on $750 CAD build

Daniel Z.

Notes/requirements

I already have the GPU (EVGA XC Ultra 1660)

Preferably white with tempered glass

Preferably RGB RAM

Will mostly be used for gaming but sometimes with multi-threaded tasks

All SSD storage would be good

Heres what I have planned, I would get the 3600 probably instead of the 2600 but it’s a placeholder

If you're going for Ryzen 3000 you probably want an MSI B450 board that can flash the bios without a CPU, but wait for motherboard compatibility testing anyways. Also wait to buy the RAM too because it's going to have major improvements and it may be worth getting something higher than 3200mhz, or getting B-die specifically again.

Should also get a case that actually has airflow, though I think white is going to be pretty limiting there

This one at least has a mesh front

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

Wait until July 7 and grab a Ryzen Zen 2 8 core 16 thread CPU for around 300 bucks and what not.  Very wrong move if you pull the trigger on that Ryzen 5 1 month away from new CPU launch.

He's already getting the 3600 and stated that the 2600 is just a placeholder.

Ok, well would the B450-F Strix be good? I know the VRMs aren’t great, but I don’t plan to overclock much and the MSI Tomahawk has no optical audio, less USB ports, and looks worse IMO.

I know it has no airflow, maybe the Meshify C would be better? I just really like the looks of the DG-77 and how it has a vertical GPU mount with riser cable included. I would be fine with worse temps as long as it’s not too bad. The Ryzen 5 chips don’t put out that much heat, and my GPU is even better in that regard. The boost button is also interesting to me.

I see, but I would rather go with the 275R for a Corsair case.

That works too! Similar thermals.

That's not a great review if that's all of their data points, they didn't even mention what temperature the room was, what the load was on the GPU, and the CPU cooler is massive.

That case is by design going to be worse than a mesh case in general.

If you don't get a board that lets you flash the Bios without a CPU installed you'll want to wait until motherboards are properly updated with "Ryzen 3000" ready or something on their store pages.

The gigabyte B450 boards are the ones to go for in that case. They have a wide 4 phase VRM at least.

I have plenty more data :P Here's another source with listed ambient temps and what they did. The first article did a good job of explaining WHY this particular case performs so well when it seemingly shouldn't: positioning of the front fan, and the distance from it and the GPU, and the concavity of the front allowing for a significant opening on the sides to allow airflow in.

Apparently AMD isn't recommending you to use older mobos with their new CPUs, so the only thing you could really pick out is case powersupply and memory.

that seems unlikely given that the fan has almost no access to air, more than likely the holes in the PCI-e bracket are letting in some air for the GPU, and the top of the case is all mesh so the CPU can get air from there.

Those side gaps are bigger than they appear, and they allow a pretty decent amount of air in through the front. Either way, even if that's not the reason, both reviews show that the temps are pretty good, especially for the price point.

I would place any current gen board as a placeholder, and hold out for the B550/X570 series.

It looks like MSI alone has a pretty nasty lineup coming. (And it's pretty much all RGB.)
