Okay, i know the term future proof is a bit of a misnomer. But, in the terms of Ray tracing, would it be a wise choice to pick up a rtx card?, Or a flop like nvidia Physx.

I have roughly $500 Aud to spend on a card (Gtx 1070, RTX 2060, ect.) im looking for the best option for just the future of gaming (Which is hard to say i know).

Like will 1080p die out?, Is ray tracing the future standard of games, is 140fps going to be a new standard? Especially after seeing the new specs of the next gen xbox.

In terms of real time ray tracing, no, current RTX cards is bad idea. Especially at that budget.

Ex-EX build: Liquidfy C+... R.I.P.

i doubt 1080p monitors will ever die out, but the prices of higher resolution panels will steadily decrease. As far as ray tracing, i think it will take a while, but eventually it'll most likely be implemented into most games unless a newer technology comes into play.

personally, i don't think the current RTX cards are worth the money if you just want to do ray tracing. ray tracing is still in its very early days: most games don't have it, and the cards that do run it, don't get nearly as many fps as they will in the next couple of generations.

If you want a new gpu now, I'd suggest looking for a used 1080ti. That would give you the most "future-proofing" for your budget since it's still an incredibly powerful card. Only downside is that GTX cards don't do ray tracing yet although i've heard that nvidia is trying to implement it into gtx cards

No, immature technology atm needs more time to improve. At least 3 years if even that by Nvidia's pace unless they give us a 350w stock TDP card

RTX will take 3-5 years to be useful for gamers imho, so not a concern this gen (though metro after the patches looks GORGEOUS, but it's 1 game). with a 500usd budget i highly recommend going for the smallest 1080p/144hz VA panel available, pair it with a zen 2 and a navi and you are good to go, keep in mind that both next gen xbox and ps5 is now confirmed to be 8 core zen 2+navi, so it's a safe bet for optimization.

Going for a higher resolution unless you have the budget for WCG/HDR just isn't worth it, just extra stress on the gpu without improvements in image quality.

something has brainwashed you...

1080p 60hz will still be majority for foreseeable years.  mainly due to pricing right now. cheap monitors & overkill with mid range gpu.

RTX2060 is a sweet spot to try out raytracing at target 1080p/60hz(not expecting any good games in 2 yrs to show off ray trace effect...) this shall be good enough before your monitor needs upgrade (5~8ys later?)

The problem with RTX is that only the 2080 ti can do it at high resolution.

I play games on a 3840 X 1600 75hz ultra wide monitor. With a RTX 2080 ti I can run at the monitors refresh rate Metro Exodus(high) and Show of the Tomb Raider(ultra) with ray tracing.

To me ray tracing is just another hard to run graphic enhancement like ENB and Reshade.

When I first started using ENB with Skyrim in 2013 I could only get 40 fps at 1080p with my GTX 970 with no DoF. With DoF on I was in the 20s. I still play the game with the same ENB and it takes a 2080 ti to stay over 60fps at 4k. My GTX 1080 ti was in the 50s playing the game at 4k.

So this is old stuff to me.

Ray Tracing has less visual impact in game visuals now than ENB and Reshade do. It is nice but the 2 games I have played with it look nice with it off so it is not a big deal.

The only way to future proof with ray tracing in mind is with a 2080 ti or a Titan RTX.

Those are the only available choices, so that is the only way to future proof.

Really though, buying an RTX 2080 ti will last for quite a while for basically everything.

It's such a beast of a card.
