so I'm troubleshooting my new system:

AMD 8350

cooler master hyper n520 cooler

Sabertooth 990fx r2.0

geforce gtx 780

corsair hx850 psu

NZXT phantom 630

Samsung evo 120gb

WD black 2TB

and ASUS recommended that I try booting without the cpu since I'm getting nothing but a black screen and a constant light on the cpu led on the mobo.

Went to remove the cpu cooler and it was ON THERE. I mean is cooler master putting super glue in their thermal paste? Anyway I tried slowly pulling and ever so gently rocking side to side to help loosen it up because it just was not coming off. i gave it a tug and the cpu came right out with it. needless to say I am concerned about the health of the mobo. the cpu pins look ok.

is my mobo ruined?

any suggestions for a thermal paste that will let go of my cpu when I need to remove it again?

AMD FX 8350, ASUS Sabertooth 990fx R2.0, Crucial Ballistix Tracer 4x4GB 1866, PNY GTX780, Corsair HX850, Phantom 630, Samsung 120GB SSD, WD Black 2TB HDD

Rest in peace, legend.

AMD Ryzen 7 5800X, Gigabyte RTX 3070, 32GB RAM, 4TB Samsung SSD, and a crippling depression that causes me to buy games and not play them lol

Maybe you put thermal adhesive on your CPU instead of thermal paste, lol.

I've seen people recommend wiggling it in small intervals back and forth, in a clock wise and counter clock wise motion. Then if that didn't work  using a hair drier or letting the computer run briefly to warm up and loosen the thermal paste. It's never good if you pull the cpu out with the cooler, but there's only one way to see if it's broken.

You should be ok, I started doing the same thing once and I have almost the exact same specs. As long as none of the pins are damaged you can just release the retension arm and replace to cpu

This is typical thermal adhesive problems, maybe defective thermal compound.

I had this problem with a Phenom II that was brought to me.

I used a cutter to split the CPU from the heatsink. I cleaned both surfaces, and fixed the pins that got twisted. It worked fine after this.

Probably your motherboard is is till perfect. just check for bent pins.

I will do that next time.

ok that is reassuring :)

while I'm here any thoughts on the black screen and cpu led? weird thing is sometimes if I leave it unplugged overnight it has booted right up in the morning sometimes. but here in the last few days it has not worked at all. when it does boot up it will run for days and I can game with no problems. I have tried flashing the bios and even removing the mobo battery for an hour as suggested by a friend of mine and then reflashing the bios. I just tried booting without the cpu and same thing- can't even get into the bios. black screen.
