Intel i7 8700k only has 16 PCIe lanes???

So I have a computer with an Intel i7 8700k, Asus Prime Z370-P motherboard and a 1080 Ti Graphics card.

I want to add a wifi card which will take 1 PCIe lane. Will this work out, as the GPU takes all the PCIe lanes? Will the GPU performance be affected? What should I do in this situation?

It'll be fine. Your GPU will drop down from 16x to 8x, which still is plenty of bandwidth for it, and performance shouldn't be affected at all.

Nah, the chipset will handle the wifi card and the GPU will stay at 16x

The CPU has 16 user available PCIe lanes. If you put the wifi card on a slot that uses CPU lanes, it'll probably drop to 8x for both. For normal use, you wont notice any difference.

 

Depending on the mobo, you probably also have PCIe slots from the chipset. If the wifi card is connected to those, the CPU lanes are not affected.

 

So, it depends on what slots are offered by the mobo, and which one you use.

Forgot about the chipset lanes.

 

Either way, performance won't be affected.

Technically the CPU has 20 Lanes -> 4 for the Chipset. Though Intel calls it something different.

 

As the PCIe lanes, it depends where you put it. If you put it in a slot that's connected to the Chipset, it doesn't affect the GPU.

But if you put it in the other, switched x16 Slot, it does. 

But if its an x1 Slot, its fine...
