Help with Ryzen 5 2600X Build on B450 Tomahawk

Hi Everyone,

This is my first post so go easy. I've done 10 PC builds before and for my next one I'm upgrading to an AMD Ryzen 5 2600X build on a MSI B450 Tomahawk board. This fits my budget and looks to give me better performance. I primarily use my PC for some gaming and mostly photo editing in Lightroom and Photoshop. For gaming I'm planning to go with the Zotac RTX2060 card which is a substantial upgrade from my current GTX970 base GPU.

I know from reading elsewhere that the Ryzen 5 2600X can handle higher speed RAM up to 3200 MHz (and benefit from it) but there are issues with setup and compatibility of some brands of RAM. Apparently Samsung chips on the RAM are more "compatible" than Hynix chips.... The build will have 32GB of RAM on board to help with my photo editing workflows and so I have selected the Corsair Vengence LPX 32GB CL15 Kit (CMK32GX4M2B3000C15W). That part number is listed on the QVL for MSI with the Tomahawk B450. However I'm concerned because the Amazon listing I'm looking at says for Intel 100 series. Has anyone has got this pairing working and the XMP turned on and stable with clock approaching 3000MHz? Trying to need to avoid a bunch of troubleshooting getting this new rig to POST.

Thanks in advance for input!

Shouldn't matter too much; QVL isn't relevant most of the time

Ryzen 7 3700X / 16GB RAM / Optane SSD / GTX 1650 / Solus Linux

Thanks for the reply. Even with it saying for Intel 100 series? It's just puzzling me...

2600x? i want you to check current pricing on the 1600, 2600 and 2700

all much better value

and i can bet that ram is either skhynix or micron, most sammies are on cl14, aka sammie b

I'd just get something from team or something at 3200 cl16, much cheaper

and look at the vega 64 too

there is certainly better SSD other than QVL if the price is close enough. Im not gonna lie that 32gb is very overkill if you dont need it and use it tbh.

Corsair Vengance should work fine.

Right now i have r7 1700 and a 4x8GB of random gskill hynix 3600mhz ram running at 2933mhz.

BUT ryzen 2000 improved the memory compatibility, so 3000mhz should be doable on 4 x 8GB.

I only see your reply if you @ me.

Thanks for the input. I looked on the MSI listing for the part number and it says the chips in that RAM are Samsung. I may take a look at the Ryzen7 2700 though. It's mostly the memory that's giving me pause before ordering.

I'm pretty set on the RTX card though.

Good luck getting the memory to run at 3000+.

I can't get my 3000mhz to run more than 2666 on a b450.

Maybe the msi board is better than my asus but it seems to be a issue overall.

I run hyper x 2x8gb 2666 ram at 3000mhz on my msi b450 tomahawk. Sometimes you just don’t get lucky
