New Office PC build

Go to solution Solved by WoodenMarker,

My actual budget in my own currency is 5500-6000 DKK, which is around 1000-1100$

Taking the price differences into consideration, the budget I set is pretty close to my "actual" budget, but I'll keep that in mind for the future - thanks :)

How's this look?

701f7fb4f175d46154e7ad7b84ed6dd5.png

Hello there.

I'm planning to make an office PC for my mother, as her old one is getting extremely slow and old (It's nearing its 10th year now with pretty much 0 upgrades other than a new power supply a few years ago).

We decided a new one would probably be best, as everything in it is so old now that it's just not worth it to reuse the parts.

1. Budget & Location

I'm located in Denmark, so hardware in general cost a lot more here. For example the MSI Twin Frozr 780 Ti seems to cost almost 200$ more here compared to Newegg (Not sure if Newegg includes taxes in their prices though - if not, the difference is probably less). My budget would probably be around the 600-800$ area, which should give room for the additional costs, and it should be more than enough for an office PC.

Also, she hates when things gets too slow too quickly, so if it means to spend an additional 100$ for a much better CPU, then it wouldn't be a problem.

2. Aim

As said before, it's going to be used primarily for office use like Word and Excel and no games (Well, maybe those windows games like Minesweeper once in a while). There's also going to be some minor photo editing, but it's only simpler things and no reason to get some high end CPU just for that.

I've already set the goal to have at least an SSD in there, preferably something large enough to hold most of the programs (Been looking at 120GB, since I'm not sure if she will be exceeding 60GB in the future). I also looked at the possibility of going RAID 1 with two 1TB HDDs for extra safety, since this PC will be used for lot of important work related things. Those are only ideas of course, and if you have better suggestions, then I would be happy to hear them.

3. Monitors

It will only be using one monitor, and the one we have is a 1680x1050. There will be a possibility of a higher resolution monitor in the future, however since it's only for office usage I doubt it would require too much more power.

4. Peripherals

We already have all the things like keyboard, monitor etc. The only thing we'll be needing is Windows 8, however you don't have to consider that a part of the budget, as we might have a friend who have an additional copy of that.

5. Why are you upgrading?

Most of the parts are almost 10 years old by now, and it's taking so long time to boot the PC that it's not even being turned off anymore, only put into sleep mode (which even then takes long to turn on).

Looking forward to hear your suggestions.

You're looking at $600-800 USD, correct?

Here's a decent little build that offers room to be upgraded. There's no on-board video for the motherboard, so I threw in a cheaper R7 240 - that will also help for applications that have boners for looking for dedicated cards.

This shouldn't run slow any time soon for office applications - it's potentially overkill to start, but will last one hell of a long time.

CPU:  AMD FX-8320 3.5GHz 8-Core Processor  ($159.99 @ Newegg)
Motherboard:  ASRock 970 Extreme3 R2.0 ATX AM3+ Motherboard  ($79.99 @ Newegg)

He stated $600 to $800 - and if you read my post I asked him if he meant USD. He never mentioned using euros - so as far as I am concerned, my build stands just fine.

@OmanGS your build is not good for his use.

Those are some very nice builds, and aren't pricey either, even for the danish prices.  Been looking at the Intel alternative, however, it doesn't seem like they have the motherboard here in Denmark. I've looked at similar priced ones, and was wondering what you would say about the ASUS B-85M-G? Otherwise everything else is pretty much good to go.

The ASUS B-85M-G looks similar to the GigaByte that he mentioned, probably a little better.

By the way H87 is needed for raid (at least if you dont use a pci raid controller) (As far as I know)

EDIT: Uhh another dane! Welcome to the forums!

Aye, taken into consideration. Some of the H87 ones are only around 40$ more expensive, so it shouldn't be too much of a problem.

I'll be buying the things from http://www.komplett.dk/k/k.aspx, mainly because they have a pick-up point almost exactly next to me so I can pick the parts up myself pretty much as soon as I have paid. (And in case a part doesn't work, it's always easy to RMA it without having to deal with shipping).

RMA will most likely be at the companies, not the reseller, so you'll have to pay shipment anyway.

Komplett has great customer support by the way, bought my hardware there. :)

The site doesn't use dollars. What's your actual budget?

For future reference, tell us the currency you're actually using instead of pointlessly converting them to US dollars.

Got a note directly out of the box from Corsair products.

So I didn't contact the store with their products.

But I contacted the store (Komplett, same as OP is looking to buy from (Great services besides this)) with a Gigabyte product and they told me to contact Gigabyte directly.
