Hi All,

I'm new to the world of Thunderbolt 3 and am considering using an eGPU on my Desktop PC for when I'm not using it with a laptop. I understand when considering Thunderbolt 3 Ports for laptop its best to ensure it has 4 lanes, but I'm not seeing this clarification when shopping for Thunderbolt 3 PCIe 3 Cards such as: https://www.msi.com/PC-component/ThunderboltM3/Specification

Is anyone able to please confirm that this will work with no bottle-necking/issues?

eGPU: https://www2.razer.com/au-en/gaming-systems/razer-core-v2

Thanks

Welcome to the LTT forums! First I want to clarify, as long as you are using TB3 your GPU will always be bottle-necked when playing games, this is a fact of life, if you don't want to bottleneck, just pull your GPU out, (do note you are going to need a GPU for that enclosure) and install it in your system, as modern GPUs  need more than 4 PCEI 3.0 lanes (some even need more than ?. (Also I believe that both of these ports are PCIE 3.0x2 ports)

In search of the future, new tech, and exploring the universe! All under the cover of anonymity!

If you already have a desktop PC, why do you need an eGPU? That makes...no sense.

You'll lose a significant amount of performance using an eGPU.

Hi dizmo,

I understand that it is a rare situation, but I do have a use case for sometimes wanting a strong GPU in my desktop machine and sometimes wanting a strong GPU in my laptop, but not enough to buy a strong card in both - so this seemed like a nice solution. Happy to detail to you my exact situation if you would like - but I do understand that it's very rare and probably doesn't seem right, but the alternative is buying strong GPU's in both Desktop and Laptop (and then never being able to upgrade the laptop's GPU).
