Had an issue with my sons system - Win10 - Error: Critical System Died

specs are:

MSI B450 with wifi

Ryzen 2600

RX580 8GB

SSD 120Gig

HDD 1 Terabyte

32gig ram

What ever the issue was windows could not recover from it, could not get into safe mode, could not do anything with recovery, could not use system restore point, having to do a complete re-install.

seeing as i am doing a re-install i have split the 120gig drive into 2 partitions

60gig each roughly

wondering what would be best - Ubuntu, PopOS, MX Linux, need to run steam and Play on Linux (for gog) thanks

Excluding games you going to install? More than enough.

Not sure about best but i'm currently using Manjaro and play some Steam games with it. Pretty user friendly and lots of choices when it come to desktop enviroment. If you want pretty desktop that look like Window, you can install KDE version.

Not possible. If I understood correctly  what you want to do, that is not possible in any way. BTW if you are new to linux, PopOS is the way to go.

Why is everyone recommending pop os out of the blue now?

Well, you can have steam make a library folder in your 2nd HDD. Name it something like steam library Linux and steam library windows. Then you can have steam install their games to their respective location on each operating system. Do note that games install on Linux can't be run on Windows and vice versa.

I suggest you install Ubuntu as your Linux distribution then go to drive setting and set your 2nd HDD to auto mount on start up.

Maybe because it got Wendell's seal of approval. ?

Just vanilla Ubuntu with gnome. Most users, most mainstream, and most support.

If it's a new user who used Windows all his life don't you think KDE would be a bit better? Familiar feel and all that?Ofc you can install kde on ubuntu and pop os.. IMHO pop os with gnome is better than ubuntu with gnome, but that might be just me.

Personally I don't totally get why PopOS has their own show without even snap or flatpak support, newbies need to have the biggest repository of software available, so far even on vanilla Ubuntu you need to install flatpak support but at least snaps are available out the box

Also, kde > gnome

Flatpak is the snap competitor, mostly they have the same software with a few exceptions, but why don't you give people the biggest amount of software avaiable?

Can be installed with a few clicks, just install gnome-software-flatpak-support and the flahub repo (which can be installed in the GUI too thanks to gnome software)

In KDE, can be installed in pretty much the same way with their "Discover" shop

my limited understanding of PopOS is that it is a bit more refined than Ubuntu, and it comes from System76 (linux only Computer Systems).

So it's a package manager that use it's own repo, i guess that why it's not enabled out of the box in some distros.

Pretty much that, Wendell explained it in L1 recent video.

Kde is too overwhelming. It is anything but simple. There is no safeguard for user screw up either. You can literally mod the desktop into anything and hence break anything.

No it isn't "refined". It is ubuntu with a skin on top.

Tried PopOS last night, not really newbie friendly imo.

Well turns out was just more than a win10 thing...

doesnt boot up anymore

by not booting I mean Im not even getting the bios logo screen let alone getting into an actual operating system.

being returned under warranty thankfully, hopefully they will be able to work what caused the issue, because their regular fixes weren't working.

Because it comes up to date drivers preinstalls also all the simple keyboard shortcuts for the desktop.

Does anybody know if popos has a minimum install?

Well basically it's just ubuntu...With updated PPA

You can do that in ubuntu and it takes a couple of seconds

I know that it's just easier to not have to.

I use Ubuntu 18 LTS because we use jump cloud at work which only supports LTS :(
