With summer fast approaching, I'm finding myself wondering exactly how often my MBP 2015, Retina, 2.8 Ghz i7... is actually throttling. So I downloaded Intel Power Gadget and the answer is... a lot. In fact, during my work day, I'm pretty often finding myself with 5+ cores fully loaded, fans roaring and my package temperature just below 100º.

So outside of pulling the machine apart and voiding the warranty... what other options might there be? I suppose I could just get a big fan (or couple of fans) and just blow it nice and hard to cool it off... but what else might I try?

There's not much you can do outside of using liquid metal on the CPU, since there's no way to make the heatsink bigger to properly fix the issue.

I edit my posts a lot, Twitter is @LordStreetguru just don't ask PC questions there mostly...

Spoiler

What is your budget/country for your new PC?

what monitor resolution/refresh rate?

What games or other software do you need to run?

don’t do this. putting liquid metal in a laptop is a terrible idea. if any slips out it will fry your laptop. My 2014 15” mac book pro was running really hot so i replaced the thermal paste in it with noctua NT-H1, a non conductive thermal paste. thermal paste cures over time and becomes less effective. replacing it can make your cooling more effective. My macbook pro is running a lot cooler now.
