Excuse my potential ignorance, but like the title says, why is 3dmark a thing especially for competition?

For the last hour I have been pushing both my cpu and gpu far past clocks that I know will immediately crash in other benchmarks and some games.

It's like getting to drive a sports car on the autobahn. Sure you can, because you're allowed to, but you're probably only going to do it once, and only if you can do it safely.

3Dmark is presently the closest thing to a "Real world" game environment, though there are games that have bechmarks that eat video cards for breakfast (see FFXIV Stormblood benchmark, which crashed a lot of factory OC'd and lower-end GPU's.)  Neir Automata and FFXV also make GPU's cry and are some of the few examples where a game punishes the GPU more than a synthetic benchmark can.

Before 3DMark bechmarks were done with various versions of Quake with a pre-recorded path through the game. This is essentially unchanged from how benchmarks work now.
