As of right now, I have a decent build, but with my birthday coming up, I would like to upgrade my current rig. I do a lot of gaming and school work on this PC, but not too much streaming or workloads like video editing. Recently, I acquired a MSI GTX 1080 Armored Edition for $300 open box from a nearby Micro Center, so I would like to keep the GPU. Please feel free to comment on what I could possibly do better or have a better combination of colors/compatibility.
This is my current build:

then there is no point in upgrading the cpu.

if you really had to check out ryzen 3000 coming soon

9600K barely even makes a difference, if you were going 9700K or 9900K then yeah but at this point its diminishing returns for your use case.

And if you're gonna drop $170 on a CPU cooler, get a NZXT Kraken X62 or X72

I would just swap out your old CXM PSU for the RMx and call it a day.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 3600  Heatsink: ID-Cooling Frostflow X GPU: Zotac GTX 1060 Mini 6GB RAM: KLEVV Bolt 3600Mhz (2x8GB) Mobo: ASUS B550-F ROG Strix (Wifi)  Case: Fractal Design Meshify C PSU: Deepcool DQ-M-V2L

the 9600k isn't a CPU upgrade, pick up an 8700k or 9700k instead. the 750w RMx isn't needed, a 550w unit is more than enough.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Unfortunately, it's not a joke, although I do see where you're coming from. I just wanted to see what other people think of this and possibly get some advice to tweak it, no need to be rude :P

what is your monitor resolution/refresh rate.

i see no reason for you to upgrade or build a new one. thats already blazing fast compared to many people.

Currently 1080p 144hz (Two of them)

The best upgrade would be a new GPU or monitor. Your CPU is fine, but if you want a new one, go update BIOS and pick up a 9700k or 9900k. Maybe get a 2080Ti but that’s only if you’re running 1440p 144fps.

Right, but I don't need the power of an i7 or an i9 processor. I'm thinking of upgrading to the next gen i5, or should I wait until they drop something else?

if you don't need it then don't upgrade your CPU, you won't find much of an improvement on the 9600k with what you have now.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 5 5600X Heatsink: Gelid Phantom Black GPU: Palit RTX 3060 Ti Dual RAM: Corsair DDR4 2x8GB 3000Mhz mobo: Asus X570-P case: Fractal Design Define C PSU: Superflower Leadex Gold 650W

Well I’d pick up a 1440p ultrawide and a 2080Ti if you want the best experience possible.

Your proposed upgrade is a completely lateral move. It's in no way an upgrade. It's the same GPU, the more recent CPU, but with basically the same performance, and a little bit of a better power supply. Also if you were to make the switch to the 9600K, you wouldn't need that Z390 board. You could actually stick with the Z370 board you have and just flash to BIOS to support 9th Gen.

Now, for your workload, a CPU upgrade of any kind is not necessary. The 8600K performs very similarly to a 9600K and the 9700K and 9900K are both minor upgrades and not worth the cash since you're already on the 8600K. A GPU upgrade might be better given your 144Hz monitor. But even that is kind of a waste since you only recently got the 1080. I'd say the best thing you could do is spring for a 1440p monitor.

If it's just for gaming, the different in frame rates between the 8600K and the 9700K certainly aren't worth the upgrage cost.

I tend to agree that a solid 1440p 144hz 1ms G-Sync monitor is your best upgrade path.

2/3 years from now when we have 2 new gens of CPU/GPUs to compare to THEN dump your cash into hardware. That's when you'll be hurting more for it.
