How far would I be able to OC the R52600 on an air cooler??

David_Kwan

Hi guys,

So back in Feb I purchased and put together my first PC.

At the time I wasn't even thinking of overclocking the CPU. But after using it for a few months I thought why not?

So which air cooler can get the best out of ocing my 2600? (And maybe the expected 3rd gen Ryzen later on)

I've seen many reviews about the Hyper 212 and how well it cools for its price range. And the newer black edition which looks really nice.

Then there's the more expensive ones like the be quiet! Dark Rock Pro 4 and the newer NH-U12A I saw on Amazon just now.

I have the Gigabyte B450 Aorus Pro Wifi motherboard and my RAM is the Corsair Vengeance LPX 16GB (2x8GB). I am guessing there shouldn't be too much of an issue with clearance between the air cooler and the RAM?

And I currently have the stock cooler.

Thanks in Advance!

PC Specs:

The 212 Evo is overpriced, the black edition on the other hand is a fine successor.

The DRP4 and the NH-D15 are serious air coolers, contenders with high end water coolers. The U12A is also pretty beefy, it would allow for a high overclock.

I WILL find your ITX build thread, and I WILL recommend the SIlverstone Sugo SG13B

Draws 400 watts under max load, for reference.

I'm leaning towards the Hyper 212 black edition since it's more affordable. Do you think I can OC my 2600 to 4ghz all cores with good temps?

Or how much can I oc if I get the black edition?

Edit: And can my mobo handle the oc? It's B450 and I read that it can do mild overclocks but nowhere near the x470 lineups.

Hard to say, 4.0 is often reachable but silicon lottery is always a factor. I wouldn't necessarily count it out, but you'd also be satisfied with 3.9.

Ahh.. forgot that not all cpu's are made the same...

But 3.9 seems like a viable boost on an air cooler.

I'm also thinking of lighting up my build with a few RGB fans. Would the corsair LL120 fit the Hyper 212 black edition?

The 212 black edition uses new wire clip designs, I believe they fit any 120mm fan because they loop through the screw holes.

I see thanks!

Now I'll have to look up on how to set up RGB fans.

If you want RGB, you could just get the Hyper 212 RGB Black Edition or a larger heatsink if you're going to replace the fan in the first place.

Where are you shopping / located? What case are you using?

I live in Fiji so I only shop on Amazon. The shipping and import tax hurts a lot from my first purchase...

I'm using the NZXT H500 case. The top and rear fans are the ones that come with the case.

I was thinking of getting the LL120 RGB 3 pack that comes with the lightning node pro. Then just swap out the exhaust fans and the cooler fan and replace them with the corsair ones.

I know nothing about RGB and what's needed so I'm in no rush to get those RGB fans. Need to see what else I need like a USB 2.0 hub or something.

Open to suggestions as I feel like my case is very lackluster without any flashy lights.

212 Black or Arctic Freezer 34 ESports will max that chip. You will hit voltage wall way before thermal throttling occurs, but you could replace fans with static pressure optimized fans to improve airflow (the front panel is pretty restrictive)

Ex-EX build: Liquidfy C+... R.I.P.

Ex-build:

Meshify C – sold

Ryzen 5 1600x @4.0 GHz/1.4V – sold

Gigabyte X370 Aorus Gaming K7 – sold

Corsair Vengeance LPX 2x8 GB @3200 Mhz – sold

Alpenfoehn Brocken 3 Black Edition – it's somewhere

Sapphire Vega 56 Pulse – ded

Intel SSD 660p 1TB – sold

I bought two of these for the front intakes https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00KF7O58G/ref=ppx_od_dt_b_asin_title_s04?ie=UTF8&psc=1

Mainly because I heard Noctua had great fans and that these were grey and not the brown ones... you think these are ok for front intakes?

And I really wanted the Fractal Design Meshify C but unfortunately it doesn't ship here... And I vaguely remember Gamers Nexus did a video about the NZXT H500 and the thermals were pretty good. (correct me if I'm wrong.)

And any static fan recommendations? Are there any RGB ones?

If your 2600 is anything like mine, you can get to around 3.9 without OC as it can boost that far with decent cooling (better than stock). For a manual OC I got 4.2 comfortably on mine, and 4.25 on the limit. This is with a Noctua D9L which I'm not recommending, it is just what I had spare at the time I did the build. Already those overclocks are close to the wall so even if you got a much better air cooler don't expect to get much further. A balanced approach would be to get an upper but not necessarily top end air cooler, and aim for 4.2-ish at lowest voltage to keep things contained.

Gaming system: R7 7800X3D, Asus ROG Strix B650E-F Gaming Wifi, Thermalright Phantom Spirit 120 SE ARGB, Corsair Vengeance 2x 32GB 6000C30, RTX 4070, MSI MPG A850G, Fractal Design North, Samsung 990 Pro 2TB, Acer Predator XB241YU 24" 1440p 144Hz G-Sync + HP LP2475w 24" 1200p 60Hz wide gamut
Productivity system: i9-7980XE, Asus X299 TUF mark 2, Noctua D15, 64GB ram (mixed), RTX 3070, NZXT E850, GameMax Abyss, Samsung 980 Pro 2TB, random 1080p + 720p displays.
Gaming laptop: Lenovo Legion 5, 5800H, RTX 3070, Kingston DDR4 3200C22 2x16GB 2Rx8, Kingston Fury Renegade 1TB + Crucial P1 1TB SSD, 165 Hz IPS 1080p G-Sync Compatible

I'm guessing the Hyper 212 black edition can't push it to 4.2 without increasing the voltage?

If the H212BE is the budget entry, what air cooler do you recommend that's in the upper tier?

It will need more voltage for 4.2 regardless of cooler.

Not sure what to recommend as I've tended to go top end (D14, D15, DRP4). The new Noctua U12S I think is interesting but I've never used it and it isn't budget either... I did buy an Arctic Freezer 34 esports duo for test but haven't used it yet. I understand from reports it is better than the Hyper 212 Evo but it does cost more.

Well I'm in no rush, I can take my time looking into more reviews and such on air coolers.

The stock cooler is doing just fine with stock clocks. Idle temps are around high 30s to low 40s. After an hour of gaming (The Division 2) the highest temp was low to mid 70s as measured on MSI Afterburner.

At the least I think the Hyper 212 black edition should be ok with a 4.0ghz oc right? Or 3.9 depending on my cpu.

I only think about continuous compute loads, which are worse than gaming loads. The stock CPU will turbo to 3.9 on all cores, no overclock required. For my uses it can't sustain it due to heat and thus I need upgraded cooling over the stock cooler. I think it reasonable to get in the ball park of 4.2 with a Hyper 212, at least for gaming loads.

Yeah mostly gaming for me so it shouldn't be that big of a problem. What temps are considered safe for the 2600 under load? 80-85 degrees Celsius?

Don't know what's considered safe. For 24/7 use I'd keep it under 80C on a hot day.

I guess it should be fine. I don't exactly use my PC all day.

If you don't mind the silver, you could get a Lucifer V2 and replace the fan with the RGB fan you had in mind. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00S0Q1UKA/?tag=pcpapi-20#customerReviews

LL's are good if you prefer the RGB options it delivers but there are cheaper options if that doesn't matter to you.

Any other good rgb fans out there?

And the Lucifer V2 is kinda.. well not my style I guess? And it looks pretty hefty too.

If you want to avoid silver, I'd just recommend going with the Hyper 212 RGB BE.

CF120's are alright: https://www.amazon.com/DEEPCOOL-CF120-3in1-Customizable-Addressable/dp/B07D3K4XG1/ref=sr_1_5?keywords=rgb+3+pack&qid=1557802652&s=gateway&sr=8-5

My 2600 with stock cooler hits ~3600-3700mhz in BF5 and Divison 2 Around 60-70 degrees. Can do an all-core clock at 3.8ghz 1.285v temps around 67-70C when gaming. For 3.9 I need 1.3375v to be stable with prime95 and runs ~75C while gaming. 4ghz needs 1.3875v to be stable and runs ~80C in gaming but gets too hot to run prime95 for longer than 2-3 minutes on stock cooler.

CPU: Ryzen 5 2600 4ghz @ 1.35v  CPU Cooler: Mugen 5 Rev b  Motherboard: MSI B450 Gaming Pro Carbon  GPU: Zotac RTX 2060 +150/+1000 Memory: 16GB Viper 4 @ 3200 CL14 Samsung B-die  Storage: 1TB Patriot VPN100 NVMe; 500GB 860evo; 128gb 840pro CaseCooler Master Q500L  PSU: CX750M V2 Operating System: Windows 10 Pro Other: 6 Corsair LL Fans; 2 aRGB Strips

Yeah, mines run around the same temps with stock clocks while gaming. I'm about to look up how to overclock ryzen cpu with gigabyte's BIOS.
