GPU for a PCIe with 25w Power Limit

Hi,

I have a Dell Optiplex 755 SFF, with the following specs:

Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2'4GHz

4 Sticks of Kingston 2GB DDR2 800MHz

SSD Kingston A400 120GB or 240GB (its pending as the GPU)

Logitech K400+ for HTPC use

2x Bluetooth Dualshock3 (Pending to renew)

And the cuestion is, what GPU should I buy???

I have the SFF case, that allow me to put GPU with 25w TDP, Low Profile and Single socket, so I'm too much limitated

I have seen various Nvidia GeForce GT 1030 (GDDR5 obviously)

ASUS GT1030-2G-BRK (I'm from Spain, in ASUS USA it doesnt appear)

GIGABYTE GV-N1030D5-2GL

MSI GT-1030-2G-LP-OC

MSI GT-1030-2G-LP-OCV1

MSI GT-1030-2G-LP-OCV2

The Models from MSI, I dont know if they are available in Spain

Any one knows other model, with better performance that fits in that case as the models from GT 1030???

LTT has two videos that use a Dell Optiplex 380, that is the same model but with DDR3 and in Desktop case that is a bit bigger than SFF case:

And the upgrade:

id recommend getting a cx 450/550 (2017) PSU.

a used hd 7950 and a 5$ PCIe extender. then run the case with an open sidepanel and slot the GPU and PSU in. run the PSU externally if need be.

that is if you are gaming.

This is valid, but I need the SidePanel closed, So it needs to be a Single Slot, Low profile yes or yes

The PC is in a bookshelf and fits just the case and the cableling

Thanks for your response

There are some low profiled RX560, which is more powerful than 1030.

Are both those cards drawing a max of 25 watts through the PCIe slot?

NOTE: I no longer frequent this site. If you really need help, PM/DM me and my e.mail will alert me.

This is valid for my other Dell Optiplex 745 Desktop that I have in my living room, but it has a NVIDIA GeForce 210 with 1GB from my Dad's old PC, and for HBO, Prime Video, youtube and torrents, its fine

But for the Dell Optiplex 755 SFF of my room, it doesn't fit, because the DVI port and the cooler use a second slot that I haven't in this case, because the MoBo is BTX and not ATX so the cooler is at the side of the drive bay

It's posible, that the drive bay go out and use an adapter from laptop ODD Caddy for the SSD, lossing the BluRay that I have at this time. But if I need more storage I'm limited

You can strip out the dvi port if you want to you know.

Not, the AMD RX 560 has a power consumtion of 75W, as a normal PCIe can handle, but my PCIe is limited to 25W, and the NVIDIA GeForce GT 1030 has already 30w...

Should I wait for AMD to see if they launch a low end GPU with a low power consumtion with more performance that GT1030????

Yes, as Linus did, I have the tools and the experience for do it, but in case of warranties and troubleshooting it's horrible.

No you don't need to physically remove it.

Just enough to have it slotted in the motherboard.

But the Case doesn't have a second slot for the PCIe, see the images and you will understand it

I know what you mean, that's why i'm telling you this.

There's no slot on the left of the pcie, therefore you must remove the bracket in the gpu so that the gpu can be slotted in (without the bracket).

And i see that there still enough room from the HDD to the pcie for the fans.

No, there isn't space for DVI port even if I only use the LP bracket for HDMI, The metal case for the serial port is in that spaceimage.png.13f55a494ea050c264f6555e0a5634fa.png

The PCI-E most likely isn't limited to 25W. I wouldn't be called PCI-E if it was.

I have a HP DC7900SFF as a HTPC. It says the PCI-E would be 25W but it works just fine with an overclocked Radeon HD 6570 which definitely uses a lot more than that.

Really??? I have seen test with the latest BIOS of my Model, that after 10min at 35w of power consumption, it power off, so...

Posiblely, in HP MoBos, the power limit is false and is only for buy the recommended HP GPU

Be creative, don't use the bracket at all. As long as it slotted it will work.

If i were you i will just remove those ancient serial ports, this is 2019.

I cant remove the serial port... Its the same as cutting DVI Port of the GPU, but when I can, I will test a GPU with dual slot, for test

  • 1 year later...

You might be able to get away with a gt 1030 if you underclock and undervolt it, if that doesn't work get a radeon hd 6450.

So to come and clear up some things. The slot is labelled as limited to 25w BUT it can in fact supply far more power than that. The 25w is the RECOMMENDED max power put the system can easily push up to 75w. As for a card fitting just do what others did when they put a dual slot low profile card in and dremel some of the metal out without affecting the ports (of course you need to take out the motherboard and everything else when doing this otherwise you'll end up with metal shards everywhere that will short anything they touch).

So really any 75w card will work. So the best possible would be a gtx 1650 lp.
