I was wondering if there was a (free) way to transfer only my OS to another drive? I have a 2tb sshd with all my steam games, music, anime (I know, I know. There's a lot of it though), etc. I want to buy a 250gb nvme ssd to speed up my boot times and a few games. Long story short I have a VR setup in another room, so whenever I want to play I have to shut down the pc, unplug everything, move it over, plug everything in, and wait for it to boot up. The whole process would only take about 5 minutes, if I didn't have to wait 10 minutes for it to boot up. Not to mention it's also getting pretty old and slow. I also don't know where i'd get access to a 2tb hdd to easily backup my data. Thanks!

Backup what you want to save then wipe everything and fresh install

Ideally you would move your files off of that drive and reformat it, but you can also just delete windows files off of it to free some space, but it will never be truly clean.

You also need to have that drive unplugged while installing windows on the SSD.

Yeah, I don't have even a 1tb external drive to back it up to lol. So would this work then: I unplug the 2tb drive, install the new drive, install windows, replug in the 2tb drive, and delete windows off it? Would it just show up as a normal drive then?

Yeah.

Just make sure you didn't have any login password otherwise you have to mess with a bunch of permissions stuff to access the files again.

yep, you use use it like a normal drive. Might want to reset permissions though.

 

Id get a backup drive now though, you need backups if you care about your data at all.

Ok. Most of it isn't necesarily super important, it's just really hard to get back. How do you reset permissions, and how do you delete windows off the old drive? And when I copy over programs like steam, do I have to do something special, or just drop them into the right folder in the new drive?

You don't really need to delete windows, but you can delete the bootloader and boot partitions, and windows folders.

 

you want to reinstall most apps, dragging the files won't work as they makes registry keys.

 

You can set permissions in the security tab in a folder properties.

Ok cool, that doesn't seem too bad. I can make steam find my game files on my other drive right? And can I install windows on the new drive if I have the physical installation usb?

yea the games can be reused for steam.

That doesn't look bad $100 off on amazon, but I was looking more in the 50-75 dollar range. I found the XPG SX8200 Pro 256GB for $56 on amazon, and that seems to be the best deal so far. If you have any suggestions lmk!

The space is normally much more usefull than the speed. You probably won't notice the speed at all, esp from the tasks you listed. Any ssd will be a massive improvement over a hdd.

Yeah, that's a good point. Would the extra speed decrease boot times at all? And yeah, I got an sshd a couple years ago because I wasn't as wise, and thought it would be as fast as an ssd.

You won't notice the boot time differences, like 1sec of less differences. And bigger ssds are normally a bit faster aswell.

there very similar drives in terms of performance., id personally get the cheaper 660p

 

Really, don't worry about ssd performance, it won't matter that much here, any ssd will be much faster than your hdd

 

And there is much more to ssd performance the the rated read and write speeds.

Yeah, that's true. I'll probably order that one tonight then. I've been having network problems, so doing a clean install of Windows will hopefully fix it?. Thanks for your help!
