You are right about SATA vs NVMe.
However, some laptops have SSDs that only have support for NVMe or SATA.
Compatibility (B = SATA, M = NVMe):
B to B slot: OK
B to B+M slot: OK
B to M slot: NO
B+M to B slot: OK
B+M to B+M slot: OK
B+M to M slot: OK
M to B slot: NO
M to B+M slot: OK
M to M slot: OK
