So I have an old AMD Fx 4300 that I scrounged up 8 gigs of RAM for and I bought an SSD to put in it.

It currently has an old GT 730 card in it.  Little 350 watt PS...  Any recommendations for a GPU that won't be wasted in a system like this?

This system may end up gifted to someone that doesn't have a computer in the future so I don't want to spend much

A used card is your best bet. I found a R9 280x for like $60. Power(hungry)ful little card but would fit what you need. Not much out there that would fulfill your needs without a CPU bottleneck.

monitor resolution?

its a 1080 monitor.

I realize this thing won't be setting any records but I am just curious if I can put something a little more powerful GPU wise in it and make it a reasonable little gaming PC for like a kid that doesnt' have a computer.

I think a 1050 ti would be your top choice. I would suggest an rx 570 since its cheaper and a lot better than the 1050 ti but I dont think you can with that psu. Take a look at the pricing for the 1050/1050ti/rx 560.  I remember getting away with 768p gaming with a gt 740 and an i3 3240

edit; check out the used marked

I second the R9 280X. Great performance for the used prices.

I got one for $48 shipped. I stuck it in a build with an A10-7700K, and it runs things *relatively* well at 1080p even.

They are large, kinda hot, and power hogs, though. Make sure it's a 500+ watt PSU. (Idk why you'd go any lower with any GPU though...)

Depends on what you want to spend..

Personally I'd look for either Radeon HD7870 or 7970 for less than 50€ and also might want to get a new, good quality 400-450W PSU as well.

350W might be a squeeze, assuming it even has PCIe connectors.

I would prioritize upgrading the power supply to a better budget unit instead.

Thermaltake Smart 500W 80+ White Certified PSU, Continuous Power with 120mm cooling fan, ATX 12V V2.3/EPS 12V Active PFC Power Supply PS-SPD-0500NPCWUS-W

Figured with it I could move my RX 570 in to it if I wanted and with the new case/ssd/power supply and hard drives I have in it I could spend a couple hundred more bucks and just upgrade the whole thing to like a 2200g or something

Just ordered a board ram and 2200g to upgrade this system with LOL...

If you have a Micro Center around you, the R5 1600 is only $80, which matches the R3 2200g in price and you'll get a discount of $30 if you pair it w/a compatible motherboard.  I got the GIGABYTE B450 AORUS M w/the processor for $135 pre-tax.  You can get a lower motherboard, which's about $20 cheaper, but the heat syncs and quality is much better in what I purchased, so it was well worth the overall quality upgrade.

If you want any other suggestions, let me know:  I've also attached processor and graphics card prices, if interested (Vega 56 and RTX 2080 were at their deepest discount) where the processers are at their lowest price point for the last 3 weeks and graphics cards are at their lowest price for their premium cards; so they'll be lower if you don't want the top card in-slot:

In the U.S. lately it seems like word is out on the 7870 and 7970. They are selling much higher than they should be, and the r9 270X and 280X are actually cheaper... And hell, often the RX 570 is going for the same price/cheaper.

Makes no sense.

Yeah nothing like that anywhere near me.  I got that same motherboard for 80 on amazon yesterday.  I wanted the APU because it could be downcycled into another system in the future that wouldn't require a GPU and it has a fair bit of overclock potential since I also picke up a 212 cooler for it so I won't be using the wratih
