A budget would be useful. Regardless, you should upgrade the CPU and GPU if you intend on gaming. You'll be able to get away with just a better GPU to be honest. an R9 380 is a great card for around the 100$ mark. I'd throw in a cheap 20$ 120GB SATA SSD for Windows 10 as well. Ideally, you'd build a new system, but I don't know your financial situation. Hope this helps, dude

you can upgrade it, you don't need a new of everything:

1- you need to remove your old 4 GB RAM then add 2 x 8 GB DDR3 1866 memory kit, you have to plug (((only 2 or 4))) sticks of RAM.

if you have 4 DIMM slots in your motherboard then you probably has 2 set of colors so plug the 2 sticks to the same color

if you plug 3 sticks of RAM from different model number you will lose dual channel performance and may have some memory management issues which appears sometimes as blue screen to death so if you already bought 2 x 8 and pluged them beside your old 4 GB then consider removing your old stick for better performance and stability

2- you need a decent gaming monitor, I can't advise you which one since it totally depends on your personal preference, but I can only recommend FreeSync whatever your perference was, for me I prefer lower resolution and higher refresh rate so I got 144 Hz monitor from MSI (MAG241CR), it is curved 1080p FreeSync monitor

things you have to look for when buying gaming monitor:

1- refresh rate (not higher than 144Hz because it won't make you better gamer)

2- input lag (not higher than 8 ms and 4 ms is recommended)

3- response time (not higher than 5 ms)

5- resolution of course

4- sRGB coverage (100% or above)

5- monitor size of course (24" or higher)

6- not a PWM monitor (it may cause headaches)

7- 3D (for more fun if you care, but you will need a special glasses from nvidia that cost arround 150$)

8- FreeSync (G-sync is just paying 150$ more with no benefits so far!!)

9- type of panel (TN monitor, VA or IPS)

TN monitors are pretty old with washed poor colors, poor contrast and color accuracy, but it has the lowest response time and input lag

IPS has a high input lag, IPS glow issue and high response time, but it has the best viewing angles and color accuracy so it is abvious that it is not for gaming, but for video editors, designers and as a TV.

VA monitors has high response time that has been lowered to 5 ms last year and with new 1 ms mprt technology it turned to be the best gaming monitor you can get.

VA monitors has more vibrant colors and higher contrast than IPS  ones but IPS color accuracy are better.

I think 1 ms mprt VA monitors are the best in the market for gaming these days and there are cheap prices of them too.

I can also recommend ASUS, MSI and SAMSUNG (Those are the best)  but LG, Viewsonic and Benq are also good brands

there are hundreds of monitor models out there, make sure to get something new by 2018

the problem is monitors manufacturers does not provide all these information above in specs so you have to look for reviews by yourself.

3- you need a new GPU, I think you should buy the RX 570, I got a deal for ya for 130 bucks

https://m.newegg.com/products/N82E16814202283

don't go higher because it does not worth it and your CPU won't handle better GPU, don't also go lower because it won't worth upgrading

don't go for nvidia since you don't want to miss AMD FreeSync optimization.

4- don't forget to check your current power supply cover on the side, look for 12V and see if there is 2 of them or only one, gather the amps under of them and multiply it with 12, if the result was something near 350W or above then you don't need better power supply and you can buy RX 570 but if it is lower then you may need another one, you can check that after installing the GPU.

symptomps are PC restrating, shutting down or freezing, nothing else, so if you got something like that then change your PSU.

5- any SATA 120 GB SSD will do a great job for your system, but to make sure that your SSD will last long enough before it wear out, you gotta check the manufacturer specs (any 3D NAND TLC or QLC can last long enough, just make sure it is 3D NAND flash)

once you done your PC will be for 2019 gaming ?

his PSU may not handle the R9 since it is not a power efficient GPU and it takes about 200 watts nearly so he will have to pay extra money for another Power supply, add to that bottlenecking will be serious because the CPU won't handle it which will cause stutters so he has to cap frames in order to play games without issues

Yes, my mistake - ideally a 500W+ PSU would be good too. It can easily deliver over 50FPS though, assuming you tweak graphics. It's best to just get a 570 now tbh since it only costs roughly 130$ for the 4GB variant.

If you got that for free then for sure yeah it is very good, but if you paid more than 90$ for it then it is not good, however you may need better power supply, try it and see if it works without issues, you may also has to cap frames because your CPU will bottleneck it causing untolerable stutters.

Agree, it's a good GPU for that price point and even better since it was just given for free - 35$ 500W PSU will good enough (something from EVGA, like their 600W White)

Don't talk if you don't know what you're talking about, most of EVGA's lower-end power supplies aren't good.

I would say let's reset this post.

There is a lot of strange advice flying everywhere...

What is the budget for the upgrade?

  • We can't give good info if we don't know what you want to spend on an upgrade.

Yes! It's a solid (older) GPU for med/high settings 1080p gaming.

It's a large step up from the GTX 730 that you have.

  • Did you pay for it?
  • What did you pay him?

Generally speaking if you want an upgrade, your best path will be to move away from the Athlon CPU and into a more modern setup. This will require a new MOBO, and new DDR4 RAM. Since you aren't a hardcore gamer, the R9 380 is a solid graphics card, and a fine place to stay for now.

Power supply sales are currently not great through the typical online retailers. Prices are pretty high for almost all units, so if you're in the market, it may be a good time to look at the deals on a midrange 80 Plus Gold unit, since they are only $10-15 more than a reasonable bronze. If you're looking to upgrade in the current market, I would look at something like these:

That doesn't help at all. You could be playing some visual novel with MS paint graphics like Umineko that would run fine on windows xp machine from 15 years ago or you could be playing Assassin's Creed 3. We need specific titles to help pick out what's best for you.

Isn't this this post quiet old, you did not upgrade yet, I remember that you wanted advice to upgrade without changing your mobo and you said that you were in a tight budget and you don't have monitors now I see that you saved money wanting a full upgrade

I see many of these info has been changed so instead I suggest you create another new thread and specify exactly what you want so you won't waste your time and our time too.

Alright, we can't help you if you aren't specific.  If you needed to go to a hotel in a city and were taking a cab you wouldn't tell the cabbie, when asked where you needed to go, "the hotel", but that's what you are doing to us.

There are games on Steam that will play on a computer that costs $300 like one based on an AMD Ryzen 3 2200G and there are games that need modern components.  So saying "steam games" is as helpful as not responding at all.

Please stop being vague, if you want people to help you the least you can do is put together a list of software you use and what your computer can't do well.  If you can't be bothered then we shouldn't be trying to help you.
