Buying a New Phone, Which Method is More Plausible?

jiyeon

Hi, so I'm on my way to buy an iPhone 8 Plus, and I find myself with two methods:

  • Method 1 - Directly through Apple
    • This would involve me buying an iPhone 8 Plus 64GB directly from Apple through Apple UK.
      • Buy iPhone 8 Plus 64GB Silver for £699
      • Cashback £155 in exchange for handing in my iPhone 6s
      • I would be paying in total exactly £544
  • Method 2 - eBay
    • This is the method my dad advises I should go for.
      • Buy iPhone 8 Plus 64GB Silver (in new condition) for however much I can find it for - I've seen a listing for £479 so far
      • Sell iPhone 6s on eBay for an uncertain amount as of now
      • I would be paying under £350 potentially depending on how much I can sell my iPhone 6s for

Which method would you guys take if you were in my shoes?

Here are some notes to consider in my position:

  • My parents advised the max I should be spending on a phone is £500, but I can go over if I feel it is worth it.
  • I recently replaced my iPhone 6s' battery myself, so I'm concerned about selling my iPhone 6s on eBay due to potential casualties with the device, I wouldn't want to be held responsible for that.
  • It is my own money I'm spending, and I'm pretty tight on it due to recently becoming unemployed.

Hi !

That's definitely something that I can advise to you (solution 2). However, I would recommend selling on a "local" second hand website. Meeting your buyers (no alone) is way safer IMO plus you won't have to pay ebay. We do have one in france and it's very helpful. I'm selling my iPhone year after year in order to keep up to date (I sell them at a lower price but I get them cheaper as long as I work at a network carrier).

However, iPhone 6s prices start going lower and I'd not be expecting one to be sold much above 200-250€ depending on its condition.

I hope this helps !

Thanks for the advice!

Yeah, I just found a listing for a fully new iPhone 8 Plus 64GB in silver for £599 with 1yr Apple warranty so I'm highly tempted.

As for my iPhone 6s, I would need to consult with my dad as he is certain he wants to use eBay as what he used to sell was always within our area, so it shouldn't be a problem there. :)

I'm just concerned that I've recently replaced my 6s' battery so I wouldn't want me or my dad to be responsible if my 6s were to shit the fan with the buyer...

Offer me a phone that will support at least 5 major Android versions from the OEM and then we'll talk.

Don’t buy a used iPhone from EBay. The battery will be worn out. A new phone will cost more but have a better battery that will last longer.

I'm not buying a used one, it would be a completely new one I'm after.

People do; even more people blindly bitch about other people's purchasing decisions.

Would you be okay with buying a iPhone 8 Plus on Ebay classified as "Open Box" or "New (other)"?

Cuz a "New" or "Brand New" iPhone 8+ costs $105 (£80) more than one that is open-box (and $100/£76 more than an iPhone 8 in equal condition).

Whenever I go on Ebay I select these filters to weed-out unreliable listings and limiting factors:

  • NETWORK: Unlocked
  • CONTRACT: No Contract or "Without Contract"
  • CONDITION: Open Box or "New other"
  • CONDITION: New
  • [BUYING] FORMAT: Buy it Now
  • ITEM [ORIGIN] LOCATION: Worldwide

Here's the best listings I could find (both US & UK site listings should be the same ~ just different pricing due to exchange rates):

I listed iPhone 8s as well just in case ;)

Good Luck!

Josh

Yeah, I'd be fine with Open Box and New (Other) as long as the iPhone 8 Plus in question hasn't been previously activated.

I notice you've written down iPhone 8 listings there, I'm only interested in the 8 Plus, but thanks for the help with listings!

Have you checked out Swappa? they also sell second-hand devices like iPhones

A refurb from Apple doesn't seem bad. their refurbished products feel very brand new

No, I wouldn't be looking to buy any form of used iPhone 8 Plus, it needs to be new, or at the most unboxed. As for selling, that would be down to my dad and I'm certain he's set on selling my 6s on eBay as it's local and he's an eBay veteran.

Yeah, I talked to an Apple rep earlier this week and he mentioned how refurb products are often £100 less than their factory new counterparts and even come with a new body and battery, but call me petty, but despite being refurbished, it would still feel a bit, for a lack of a better word, icky to use.
