I have a sabertooth mainboard with only 4 slots of RAM. When I built the PC in June, I figured 32Gb of RAM would be enough. Now I sadly made the discovery that it isn't. :(

My question: Is there any way I can add memory to the system externally?

I don't exactly fancy the idea of buying 16Gb valueRAM for $160+ per module (haven't checked on compatibility yet).

Thanks in advance!

I think you'll have to get a new motherboard for 64 gig expansion (And a new chipset)

Hope I could help!

yes i just checked i need a new board -.-   But why do I also need a new chipset? does z87 only support up to 32 gigs? D:

@Ruke, I am working with complex geometry in 3D software. As of recently I keep getting Errors "not enough memory". Now there are work-arounds, but they are tedious...

Wait for DDR4 RAM and get 384GB RAM :D

But seriously, you will need both an X79 MoBo and an Extreme Edition Intel CPU on LGA 2011, like Xeons/i7s

CPU: i7-4770k (LM modded) - MB: GA-Z87X-UD3H - RAM: HyperX, 16GB 1866MHz - GPU: Palit GTX 980Ti Super - Storage: 1TB HDD + 500GB/120GB SSD (850 Evo/840) - Monitor: Predator XB271HU - PSU: 700W BeQuiet 80+ Gold

Im curious to know what 3D software you are using. I have used 3DS Max, Maya and Mudbox. Simply cranking up the complexity of the geometry and seeing how well my pc can handle it. I have not run into any "Not enough memory" error and I have 16gb. Perhaps its your gtx 670's vram? I am not sure how well Vram plays with 3D models within the program

I am primarily using Cinema4D. I can do most things without any problems, but when it comes to L-Systems its game over. I guess I'll have to wait for DDR4. I was hoping there was something like a memory riser card that would work. But I guess the Mobo would just ignore it.

On a side note, I found this on Newegg:

A MSI board that supposedly supports 64Gb at 1150...

Since you're already here and this topic has already ended :D Are there any mITX boards that support 32gigs?

The gpu vram only limits me in the viewport, not when I am rendering. 2Gb is certainly not enough in the long run, but I figured I'd either wait for Maxwell or go for Titans once they go down a little more.

@Priller, Win 7 Pro. Its a software error, has nothing to do with the OS :)

That is a typo...the board only has 4 ram slots and you need 8 for 64GB.

mITX only supports up to 16GB as far as I know

EDIT: It might be your GPU's VRAM that isn't enough if you have the 2GB 670. You might need 3-4GB

Ya never know.

X79 would be a ram to get more ram on a board. I haven't seen anyone use the large 16GB dimms before.

@sally, you can get 16Gb valueRAM, so no need for 8x8 on some boards.

also, like I said, the vram doesn't affect the rendering, only the live viewport.

on servers they would run ram off riser boards that has a extra molex power socket to power the extra ram, but I don't know if this would work with your board ?
worth a look though :)

The easiest way, is to buy a new Intel board with the extra ram slots. either way, I suspect it going to cost you a tidy sum :(

While rendering when you have lots of polygons you need a lot RAM, so I understand that guy. For rendering you better go with 64gb or as someone mentioned with this board: http://www.amazon.com/MSI-Motherboard-BIG-BANG-XPOWER-II/dp/B007JLCKFG/ref=sr_1_15?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1390348909&sr=1-15&keywords=socket+2011+motherboards

you will need to change socket & get other CPU as well.

well well well... 32 Gb is enough for most of the things i do. I reality it really isn't so much the amount of polygons as it is the number of hairs. This is getting a bit more into 3D talk, but with L-Systems you give the program a formula and certain premises, and then it generates lines based on your inputs. Depending on how complex your premises are, you can create many branches and end up with custom trees. Since you cannot render lines, the program will interpret them as hair. Thus you can end up with millions of hairs. With my current project, I have no idea how many branches there are but they take over an hour to render at 720p. However I always like to render in 1440p, at which point i will get the error. The work-around is to split the picture and render them seperately, then put them back together afterwards. However, with say a 300 frames animation, I'd be stitching 1200 pictures (300x4) which just isn't worth it :D

The MSI board looks intriguing, but I don't really like the idea of going backwards in terms of sockets. I was planning on selling my system anyways. Might aswell buy a stacker and put a dual xeon in the bottom and a small gaming rig in the top one. Just gonna wait a little for maxwell.

Thanks for all your comments guys! I know some of you have trouble with understanding why I need 32 or more, so this is for you (if you like math, feel free to calculate the branches) :P

What are you doing where you need 32+ gigs of ram.

well you need it to watch 200 plus adult films at once as well as rendering your cat eating food, as you play bf4 well you watch all Linus videos and 32gb of ram just doesnt do it all
