Confused; 9900k or 9980XE or 1000k in the future.

Im going to be upgrading from my rig in signature.  I want to stay with HEDT.  My choice is a 9980XE however I don't like the fact its single performance is less then a 9900k and its cores lack way behind AMD.  Why spend 1800 bucks for something that is essentially slower in game and general workflow that involves 1 cpu core or a couple for that matter.  When will HEDT technology take us to 5Ghz like the 9900k did ?  Im hoping DDR4 comes out the same time I upgrade;  I would want 64GB ram in quad channel.  When will 10k CPU going to happen ?  Also will it happen in conjunction of DDR4 RAM ?

I just like to build something great that will last me 7 years at least.  With the only upgrade being video card.

Ive researched but no where does it talk about the next CPU gen after 9900k or 9980XE.  I can stick it out as my current rig is very nice to me and never given problems.  Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

well if it had 18 9900k cores, then you are looking at a ~500-600W TDP.

have fun cooling that. My recommendation is to buy a silicon lottery binned 9980XE (highest bin)

Direct Die w/ crazy water loop/cascade/chiller

Know somebody with a direct die 7960x @ 5ghz (he says he can push 5.2) single core is around 4.8ghz 9900k, but his setup is crazy loud (4 pumps)

I'm not gonna debate whether or not that CPU's a good choice or not.

But I recommend you wait until Zen 2 chips hit the market... just to see what AMD has to offer.

Thank you Firewrath9 and r2724r16.  BTW The upgrade is not urgent as my PC runs just fine.  It will be in the near future, I just don't want to by a CPU then a month later the new series comes out.  I told myself when DDR5 comes out I will then make a serious decision to upgrade.

Why? Why not just go for a lower core count HEDT processor?

Probably when HEDT gets the same refinements as the 8th and 9th gen Core i3-7 chips. But 4.5-4.8GHz is nothing to sneeze at.

if you want an upgrade, perhaps consider E5-16xx V2 xeons or e5-26xx, as they fit in your X79 board, and are pretty cheap (relatively) on ebay (100-300$)

If you want cores and frequency and dont want to chough up for the 9980XE. Your option will be to wait and see how Threadripper Zen 2 turns out.

i mean... it exists

we call it the 600 watt thermal throttle on a dual 360mm rad

aka the 9990xe

Actually, Puget ran it on a H80i, w/ a pair of Noctua industrials. Its stupidy high binned. prob could push 6ghz with only phase change + direct die + stupid voltages

wait, what? I've seen it at derbauwer and he had it turning up to 98 degrees on stock with a dual 360 rad...

is it a later revision?

The 9990XE is literally just a 9940X with a factory overclock. The H80i can only barely run it at stock with upgraded fans.
