Backlight Bleed??

hi, I just recently bought the Alienware m15 with gtx 1070 maxq and i7 8750h. it was great until when I head on to edit some photos for my university and edit some videos for personal project when I realized that the 4k display doesnt seem to display black quite right. it was only with black colours and it was fine on other colours (picture was taken on a Galaxy Note 9 inside a pitch dark room). is this backlight bleed or some other problem? and can I file for warranty or should I just suck it up? thanks by the way

As can be seen, the top right, bottom right and bottom left  along with some spots in the middle are brighter which is an issue especially with stuff like darkroom editing and dark content such as games and editing dark videos. Or just general working with dark mode or dark mode web content.

Warranty should include it. You can return it then. I think this will be the best decision anyway if you pay so much for a laptop.

But this is a usual problem of laptop screens. Hope you have more luck with the new one.

Call their service and tell them your problem.

Will do since I owned it just about a month. The display is an optional 4k panel (regrettably I didn't opted for the 1440p or 1080p high refresh rate ones) but it did costs me an extra $250.

Do you really need a 4k screen? It drains your battery extremely.

Maybe tell the customer service you return this and take the 1440p screen version instead?

I'm sure they will help you and don't want to lose a customer.

Well the 4k Is quite nice and I do use lightroom quite a lot so the extra resolution help a lot when editing pictures (which is what I was doing when I noticed the bleed) and the battery life is not that badly impacted as the gtx1070maxq and i7 8750h basically hogs is way more. I might try getting it down to 1440p tho. Thanks for the advice.

Ok, If you really need 4k I would suggest you to do the following. Ask customer service for a 1440p model, which should mean you get a bit money returned, so you should get a 4K display from Samsung, which has great colours and is not expensive. Every time you want to edit you can do this with the external monitor.

Additionally for a special discount because of the difficulties you had ?

LCD displays will never reproduce dark colors correctly, they physical cant. Add on top of that, that most Monitors have terrible uniformity QA, ur limiting urself to some very high end dedicated studio grade monitors for accurate color reproduction with minimal uniformity issues.

That said,, thats a terrible image, u should RMA.

I know that ips can't quite make it oled but its still far worse than my older ips led monitor from lg. Was expecting something more like this. 4 uniform bleed.

Well for starters a ot of that , and what u have (being IPS) is likely IPS glow, rather than BLB.

IPS glow visually changes as ur viewing distances/angle changes, so if the amount of IPS glow / BLB changes as you move closer and further away form the screen, its most certainly IPS glow.

Either way however, what ever it is , that level is unacceptable, and imo i also wouldn't accept the amount pictured above.

The short of it is this. All 3 LCD panels types have terrible flaws, u need to decide which your going to deal with.

Will it be IPS glow and slow pixel response (IPS)

Will it be Slow pixel response and poor viewing angles (VA)

or will it be poor color/blacks and poor viewing angles. (TN)

Me personally, i cant stand any of them, its why i have held on to my Plasma for so long , and wish i had kept a hold of my old Trinitron CRT monitors.

The best u can hope for is a monitor , what ever the panel type, with good uniformity, low level BLB/IPS glow, and no dead pixels. But such a monitor is akin to a 'golden chip CPU' ,, they are rare and may take many many purchases and RMA's to find one.

Thanks for the advice. The last monitor was an ips with zone lighting and the image I use still have white spots, making the result worse than it could have been. But i agree it still have flaws. And thank you for pointing out that what I have is an ips glow. Will be forwarding that to the Dell technicians. Also, I prefer ips since I (growing up sucks but hey we got better gears than when we have no money) does less gaming and morw working recently. Still, I will be asking for rma as that is indeed horrible.

The LG display might be va actually. Will be checking on that soon. But they have better black level than my old TN panel which is just horribly all over the place(picture attached)
