Hello Everyone,

Not sure if this goes here but.

So, I have been having this issue and it followed me between two computers one newly built recently. So here is a little back story, my old computer was running slow on windows 10, it started out within a few minutes. The best way to explain is I would open an application and it would take a second, then within a blink of an eye it would take 30 seconds to over a minute to launch an application or even the task manager. Anyways, this is still the old computer I figured new parts I’ll reformat and start fresh.

Well here we go! I built the new computer and used the drives (1)(2) that were in my old computer. Well I figured maybe the drive (1) would work better with new parts. Plugged it all in and the computer booted into Windows, but it has the same problem (thought okay I’ll format) before I could do that the computer shut down by itself. Before you all say it’s a heating issues or PSU issues, it’s not, I checked 3 times and please, let me explain more.

I booted back up and it shut down again when I got in to windows. So, I went to format and the computer stayed on and allowed me to install windows again on the Drive (1). Well once that finished, I still had the same issues, OS running slow and it shut off within 2-3 minutes of being in windows.

So, after formatting and dealing with the same issues I gave up and tried a new drive (3) that I pulled out my closet and never had been used in the old computer. Low and behold it worked fine, windows was running great the computer wasn’t shutting off it was working like it should for 9 hours I was able to update windows and mess around. So, I thought well maybe windows just installed wrong on the drive (1), but I wanted to test it out. So, I plugged it into the computer with my other drive (2). The computer read drive (1) fine and I even formatted it to use it as more storage along with drive (2). Well within 10 minutes of me plugging them in the computer the same issues started happening. The OS took 30 sec to over minute to open applications and the computer shut down.

Well this is where it gets weird and I’m lost, after unplugging the drive (1) it still happened over and over. So, I wiped windows and installed in on the same drive (3) it worked fine on. Still didn’t fix it. So, I installed windows on other drive (2) that was connected, same issues. All my drives are doing the same thing, I even checked every sata cable with every drive thinking hey it could be this.

So, does anyone have ideas I’m fresh out? I don’t see how the issue that started on the old computer came to the new computer and or how possibly all my drive could be bad? So, any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

List of new parts please and any parts re-used, Details on the drives also.
When you install windows, make sure you have the latest version of 10 from the USB creation tool app so you can rule out bad drivers. When you install windows, Unplug all but the one drive you're installing it on as it will install some windows files onto another drive.

I've seen a few strange drive issues. Something you might consider is using the updated HIRENS boot CD (USB) and perform a low level format of the old drives. No guarantee it'll help, but a solid low level format/zeroing out the drive, has helped me to revive a few that were giving me some problems.

One example would be my WD 1TB Green storage drive that I had carried over from my old build. It's since been replaced with a 1TB SSD, but I was still able to get it up and running again as it was acting up. Shorthand... Windows could see the drive but couldn't create partitions or make use of the drive. I had also attempted creating a partition via HIRENS, but that didn't work either. By zeroing out the drive it worked fine again.

FYI: HIRENS is a free bootable ISO download that contains a decent amount of tools/utilities for diagnostic and troubleshooting. Just load it to USB through Rufus and you're set. The updated version loads Windows PE. Just UEFI boot from the USB and look in the Utilities folder that's on the desktop.
