Why is dual channel memory better?

in theory twice the bandwidth

When you have two sticks working in Dual Channel what's happening is that they fill up proportionately so if you're using 4gb you have 2gb in each stick.

 

So you have two places to draw the data from.

It increases bandwidth. Very important for some applications.

I've heard that Intel doesn't benefit nearly as much as AMD does from the dual channel, but I'm sure it's a benefit either way.

 

While we are here, I have heard people suggest high capacity dual channel over med capacity quad channel. Anybody know why that might be?

Maybe their needs (Rendering/Heavy loads/Databases) require or use the different configs to their strengths...

Maximums - Asus Z97-K /w i5 4690 Bclk @106.9Mhz * x39 = 4.17Ghz, 8GB of 2600Mhz DDR3,.. Gigabyte GTX970 G1-Gaming @ 1550Mhz
