Probably more down to customization since you can do whatever for your workspace in linux, but if you're going to write programs for a given OS, you should be using that OS for testing.

There's probably legitimate reasons, but I have a linux partition just for my schoolwork.

 

I initially had MacOS installed because I like it's design especially, but it had too many conflicts with my laptops wifi card so the closest thing I had to it was Elementary OS.

There's many technical reasons like Everything Is A File or simply having full control over the operating system and tons of handy utilities like cat/grep/awk/sed being built in. But the biggest thing is this: The FOSS community is comprised of people working on projects that they personally find the most interesting. Since everything is a passion project and not just some bullshit corporate thinks it wants, it ends up being where the bleeding edge breakthroughs are happening. The foundation of this is being able to freely share (and take from others), and no other production operating system carries that as a feature.

Also things like grevent in python runs horribly under windows and docker is actually a vm that requires hyper-v installed, it also whines of there isn't enough free ram.

 

Only reason to use windows would be if there was a need for it, maybe some software you're using is only on windows.

Personally I like to work with bunch of VMs for each project I work on, so I don't end up with the main system loaded with every little crap that you end up using for every project (es. older version of Java/Node/Python, specific library for compile a specific code, PATH variable, DBs etc), but you can also choose to have one VM for each language (on VM setup for Java, one for Node, etc..). This way I'm sure that every time a startup a VM I have everything I need and nothing more. The VM are usually Linux, but that's just because I work on server stuff that will run on Linux, and as others had said, you should work in the environment that the code is suppose to work on. I use Virtual Box because we are using it in the office, so if someone need to jump to a new project, you can easy copy the VM and the new comer is ready to go without losing time setting up. Obviously this is less ideal if you work on only one project. Using this method let you choose the host that you like the most as it will just run some common stuff that could run everywhere. I personally like Windows cause is easier to work with. For me. But you can use whatever you prefer.

Honestly, that's not even true. Linux inherits a lot from Unix - and even Unix made a difference between sockets and files. Plan 9 did that better, so, technically, more programmers should use Plan 9. But it seems that this is not the only reason ... :)

 

Windows is a fine development environment in 2019.

 

About the VM question in the OP: I, personally, use the WSL (Linux subsystem) of Windows 10 with the Xming server as well so I can run the unchallenged Acme2k editor (and, optionally, other Linux/Unix/BSD tools) for development. But if you want to focus on POSIX instead of the WinAPI, you'll better run a real Unix instead. (Try OmniOS or OpenBSD at least once.)

Honestly, I use a Linux vm to write C programs, as I can't figure out an easier way to write true C for desktop computers.

For everything else I just use Windows.

 

Just for completeness, the Linux VM I run for c development is a headless install of Ubuntu Server, which I SSH into from the host OS, and the dev tools I use are VIM and GCC.

Actually, please show me this solution. All the ones I've been able to find are convoluted, and usually involve getting a POSIX compiler running in/for Windows.

Oracle Virtualbox is the smoothest emulation on windows i have with Ubuntu (if you disregard server options such as VMWare/HyperVisor). If you do not have a video card (only a GP-CPU) Virtualbox is slower than the non-server VMWare for ubuntu. I have a dozen of workstation only running with only CPU integrated graphics and VMWare is snappier.

 

On the other hand, if you do not need to use Windows while on Linux or don't need to use Linux while on Windows i highly recommend to use dual boot. Fluidity of Ubuntu is affected while emulating even if it's faster than windows while being emulated but running standalone is much better especially if you are going to run it for extended period of time. In our case if we are working on C/Java/PHP we boot in Ubuntu and don't need to use windows for many hours.

You should probably start using docker, keeps everything in a single container and you don't need a whole operating system to start it

I want to clarify that this way its really needed only if you work on 3 or more project with certain frequency. So if I need to stop a project for a couple of month, I just export the VM and put it on an External Drive or company Storage, and if someone else in the future need to jump to that project, all he needs to do is import the VM, and he'll be ready to go, with all the setup an documentation. For the performance I never had any issue with slow VM with an i7 Q 740 and 8GB of RAM, so not a blazing fast PC.

This still seems like a better use case for docker as you store how build the project in a docker file so the only thing you store is the project files plus the build files.

 

It would save so much space.
