Help! My PC keeps crashing!

Qwright10

At least once a day, even while idling, my PC crashes. Not BSOD, but a semi-responsive crash. The cursor moves and some games will still run, but audio stops. Any running programs can’t be closed (nothing happens) and programs can’t be opened (task manager, etc). Some right-click menus open, but nothing works. Temps are always around 35-45°C on CPU and 50-60°C on GPU.

CPU: AMD Ryzen 7 2700X @ 3.7GHz 8 threads

Cooler: NZXT Kraken x52

RAM: 16GB Corsair Vengeance Pro @ 2133MHz

MBD: ASUS Crosshair VI Hero | BIOS 6401

GPU: ASUS ROG Strix GeForce GTX 1070ti

Storage: 240GB WD Blue SSD & 1TB Seagate BarraCuda

OS: Windows 10 Home

Edit: Both software and physical power button don’t shut down PC unless held for 5 seconds

It’s rated for 3000MHz, but auto sets it to 2133MHz. I’ve tried both speeds and nothing changes.

Everything is up to date and the problem started after getting a new CPU, Motherboard, and RAM. I’ve never had this problem before.

When playing BF1 on max settings at 60FPS with VSync, CPU uses 70% max with SMT turned off and the GPU uses ~65%

There's a version 6808 bios out there.

Load D.O.C.P. profile in the Bios (that' Asus name for XMP on AMD).

Where's the SSD?

Check your drives with Hard Disk Sentinel.

I only keep it off to lower temps and I don’t need it anyways. Turning it on doesn’t change the issue.

what temps when it is on?

integrated audio or sound card?

if it is integrated, ask your motherboard maker. this looks like the audio driver is causing the lockups.

The 6808 version seemed more unstable. I’m installing it now anyways. What do you mean where’s the SSD? If you mean physically, it’s mounted on the front of my case.

I used an existing Windows installation, but later reinstalled Windows after the issue started. Before Ryzen, I used an Intel Core i5-4440 and Dell 88DT1 H81 Motherboard.

Ah yes, sometimes using existing Windows installation can cause weird issues -- especially when switching between AMD / Intel.

You already did the new install (not the stupid Windows reset / refresh, correct?).

Only thing Windows related would be to make sure it is up-to-date.

Some of the more recent graphics drivers are optimized to work on later versions of Windows, and can be buggy with older versions (e.g. 1803 or older is not properly supported).

I am wondering if 'WhoCrashed' would be able to give us some more clues on WHAT is causing the crash.

That RAM seems a little slow to me, as Ryzen processers need fast RAM to work properly. Also your PSU might not be able to provide enough power to your components. Which company made your PSU and it's model? And Wattage will help. Also you said that you upgarded the CPU + MOBO? Did you reinstall windows when you did that or just kept on using it? As that can cause issues (which it did for me) so if you did not reinstall windows please do so. Backup any important data and reinstall.

My PSU is a Corsair Hx750i (750w). I didn’t reinstall windows at first, but I did after the issue started and nothing changed. I upgraded to BIOS 6808 and started using the DOCP profile (3000MHz) and I’ll let you know if it keeps crashing.

I usually use the built-in audio on my motherboard, but I'm using a Windows driver instead of a Realtek driver.
