I want to dual boot Windows 7 and Linux mint on my Dell Precision laptop. After a successful Mint install on a new partition it asked me to restart, when I did the computer booted into Windows with no option for Mint. After two hours of Googling and fiddling I came up empty-handed, so far I have tried all of the following commands in Windows command prompt:

Spoiler

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\mint\grubx64.efi

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} displaybootmenu yes

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path EFImintgrubx64.efi

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path EFIubuntugrubx64.efi

bcdedit /set {bootmgr} path \EFI\ubuntu\grubx64.efi

The only thing I've done is make it ask me every time I boot up, if I would like to boot into Windows 7 (with no other options). I have tried recreating my Linux partition and reinstalling Mint but that did not help. I've heard a great deal about "grub" but I don't know if that's something I'm supposed to install or if it's there already or even what it really is, but that's neither here nor there.

What is actually supposed to go here? Some people put their specs, others put random comments or remarks about themselves or others, and there are a few who put cryptic statements.

People who mentioned "grub" are referencing the Linux bootloader (yes you have it installed). When you boot into Mint, Grub pops up and gives you several options to boot from, including Windows. This means you could set your default boot drive to your Linux drive in your BIOS.

As for getting the Windows Boot Manager to recognize Linux, there are tons of guides out there to do just that. Have you seen this?

System Configuration > Boot

This menu shows you what bootable partitions you have available. It should also let you enable the boot loader so you can pick between which partition you'd like to load upon startup.

Personally though I prefer Grub.

Thank you, I was able to figure out in the end.
