Is the NH-D15s enough for the 9700k?

pineSolo

I'm building a new PC and wondering whether I should go for the NH-D15s, or the NH-D15 with one of the fans lifted to fit the ram. The NH-D15s is obviously the cheaper option, but I'm worried that it won't be enough cooling for the i7-9700k.

Some clarity would be appreciated.

If you want the cheaper option then yes the NH-D15s is enough, and you actually can overclock it a bit as well, i'm currently using the EVO 212 on my 8700K and it's overclocked to 4.6Ghz

NH-D15S should be fine so long as you don't go ham on the voltage. At 1.3v it keeps my 5820K at the high 70s max, it'll push 80s and above if I go 1.34v or more. You should be able to hit 5Ghz all core at around 1.3v on a 9th gen though, so you'll probably be fine. They run a bit hotter than the X99 chips I think, but I doubt you'll have nasty temps under gaming load (usually about 10C below stress test max at least, depending on the game though).

Why there's no love for the Thermalright Le Grand Macho RT?

People are always mentioning between NH-D15 and DRP4, while we have the Le Grand Macho RT stands out on top in every aspects between these 3 air coolers.

Benchmarks and compatibility and price of the LGMRT shows that it's simply the best big tower air cooler, even with a single 1300 rpm fan it can beat NH-D15 dual 1500 rpm fans performance with much better compatibility.

My system specs:

From my quick look at it it seems like it'd interfere with some of the big I/O covers on newer mobos, and I'm running X99 so it'd block 4 of my RAM slots. Other than that, it is a great cooler, Thermalright doesn't get much love sadly. Noctua and BeQuiet have a bigger market and mindshare so they're the most popular.

Is the newer mobo I/O cover 1cm higher than the I/O ports housing itself?

But still, as the most people concern about getting air cooler is

"Will it fit inside this case and good enough to cool this CPU?" or "Will it overhang my RAM"

So cooler height and performance and RAM clearance are the highlights for most of them.

So there the LGMRT ready to blow away all that questions, and I think the LGMRT bottom rear cutout is enough to clear any big I/O cover.

Yes it will cool it fine, I use an NH D15 with my 9900K and it works great. :)

Yeah, the I/O covers often are, and they also often extend over the VRM heatsinks and incorporate them, that LGMRT doesn't seem to have much clearance there. And on RAM clearance, like I said about my X99 rig, it'd block 4 of my slots, reducing my memory capacity by half and making it so I can't use quad channel, would do the same on any platform with 8 RAM slots. On mobos with 4 in the usual spot and without a large (or with an easily removable) I/O cover it'll be a great cooler though.

That's what I was replying to. Basically your claim that it's better in every aspect than the NH-D15 and DRP4, and question as to why it isn't as popular.
