Hi Guys,

Can you advise if the upgrade components I choose would be good or would you change anything that might gain me better performance.

Currently I have i7-4790 (non K), 12GB 1600mhz RAM, Dell's OEM MB from XPS 8700 with GTX 1060 6GB GPU and SilentiumPC Vero L1 500W 80Plus PSU.

Main use of my PC is gaming.

I am looking to upgrade my MB, CPU and RAM.

What I chose so far is:

Motherboard - MSI MPG Z390 GAMING EDGE AC

CPU - Intel i5-9600K

RAM - HyperX Predator DDR4, 16 GB, 3200MHz, CL16

will add m.2 250GB Samsung drive as well.

Can you advise if my PSU would be sufficient and or you would change any components within kinda similar price range?

Thanks!

The parts you selected aren't bad (at first glance), however, I wouldn't upgrade just yet. Your current setup should be pretty good still, so if you can wait I would. Ryzen 3000 is just around the corner which will likely be a better value than both AMD and Intel's current offerings. IPC on Ryzen 3000 will be a fairly substantial upgrade over Ryzen 2000 and may even surpass Intel (we'll see).

tl;dr

If you wait you can get more performance for less money

Thanks for the reply, I know i might be rushing this but I haven't really had chance to have decent setup anytime before. I may have some funds now but still thinking if those new components will improve the performance significantly enough vs current setup.

As for the Ryzen I am not that much into AMD, may sound weird but wanted to stay with Intel's CPU.

But you currently have a decent setup.

I can't tell for sure... but do you have an SSD in your current build? If not... for now, I'd honestly just get one of those and move your windows install to that.  Then hold off for a couple months or two to see what Ryzen 2 bring us.

The 4770 and GTX 1060 combo are pretty solid still!

Get an SSD. Wait for Zen2/Intel response. Or buy a better display.

For gaming, there not a huge upgrade with present CPUs.

Whats wrong with AMD? If the FX Series was still their current lineup I would agree, but Ryzen is a whole different game. I actually upgraded from an i7 4790k myself (great chip) but my Ryzen 1700 has been better. Buy what you want, but I cast a vote for Ryzen 3000.

I'm thinking of upgrading from a 6700k to Ryzen 3000 depending on performance; I'm mostly looking at it for the extra multi threaded performance but as others have said, AMD over the past few years has become a much better options, in both CPU and (mid range) GPU.

Thanks all, I'll look closer at Ryzen as you all say good things about it. Will wait a bit for new ones to come out and then think about it again.

For now it's not that bad after all, I have an SSD currently with 144hz display so it is running pretty smooth.

You saved me from spending a lot of money for not much needed upgrade, so thanks again!

I can understand you might be hesitant to go with AMD if you've been in PCs as long as your current CPU suggests (i.e. the pre Ryzen era). AMD was pretty s*** when compared to Intel in anything but value but with Ryzen it's changed a lot and with Ryzen 3000 series just around the corner it makes no sense to completely discard the notion of buying AMD if the rumours are to be believed about their core/thread counts an IPC.

if you weren't going to have to upgrade your entire platform and didn't have the money for fast RAM then I'd say stick with Intel but given you've selected 3200MHz RAM and are having to buy a new CPU and MOBO, it would be short sighted to put down cash right now without waiting for AMD. Besides, if AMD are too good, Intel might even have to cut prices to stay competitive (maybe...) and if not then the 2nd gen Ryzen 7s may drop in price when the new ones come around.
