  1. 1. What Android version are you currently on?

    • Android Q Beta
      0
    • Android 9 Pie
    • Android 8 Oreo
    • Android 7 Nougat
    • Android 6 Marshmallow or below
  2. 2. Are you expecting to get a new major Android OS update? - For example, if you're on Android 7, do you expect to get onto Android 8 later?

    • Yes, I expect to be updated to a newer Android version in the future.
    • No, my phone is no longer supported.
  3. 3. Do you care for getting the latest and greatest Android updates?

    • Yes, I want the latest Android updates.
    • No, I don't mind not having the latest Android.

Hi, so I've only just recently gotten Android 9 on my Samsung S8 after I queried with my provider, quite literally 3 days after I asked if I would be upgraded to Android 9...

My mum is currently still on Android 7 as far as I'm aware, and she has a Samsung S7, although she is the type not to mind about not getting the latest Android updates as long as what she currently has works.

Meanwhile I'm willing to bet both my brother and dad - who both own iPhones, the 6S+ and 6S respectively - are on the latest iOS, although they both two are also not concerned with getting the latest.

So I've been wondering how other people view Android OS updates in particular because it seems super fragmented in which devices run which OS.

each update makes it use an extra GB of RAM, like Chrome

my friends always complain android is shit due to how much memory it uses but they can't use anything else since an iphone is worth both kidneys plus a briefcase full of cash where we live so it isn't an option

Fortunately I have a phone from like 2005 and don't have to worry about that kind of bs lmao

ASUS X470-PRO • R7 1700 4GHz • Corsair H110i GT P/P • 2x MSI RX 480 8G • Corsair DP 2x8 @3466 • EVGA 750 G2 • Corsair 730T • Crucial MX500 250GB • WD 4TB

My LG G3 was updated to a buggy Marshmallow version and then they dropped support... (yes i know about custom ROMS, that's not a solution because of security)

Have a lot to complain about android to be honest, but maybe someday they'll pull their shit together, but maybe they already did i don't know.

Quote or Tag people so they know that you've replied.

My S7 and my J3 are still on Nougat (Lineage OS 14.1), but they're still up-to-date with their security patches.

The Tab S2 (8") is on Oreo (Lineage OS 15.1), but I'm really not a fan of Oreo because the whole WiFi situation is a mess.

Nougat allowed you to automatically turn off WiFi during sleep.  On Oreo they removed that setting, so it keeps the WiFi on all the time and that drains the battery like crazy.

We're talking 36h standby on Oreo versus almost 2 weeks on Nougat.

I do check the Lineage changelogs every couple of weeks and update my devices once I notice that their nightlies have a new security patch level.

Earlier today I noticed that Lineage 16.0 Pie is now available for the tablet.  So I'll probably be flashing that tomorrow.  Hopefully Pie fixes the WiFi issue.

Quite frankly I don't care what version of Android I'm on, I'd be just as happy on Froyo if that were available and secure still.

It is a super fragmented OS. Which kinda sucks. I got a OnePlus 3t with Android 8.0, I dont expect any more updates at least OS wise. This is one of the reasons I was considering and still am considering going to iOS, as Apple provides 5 years worth of updates. 5 Years on a phone is a long enough time I feel.

I just want to sit back and watch the world burn.

My boyfriend and I also have the same phone. And yes, OnePlus has already confirmed that these phones will not be receiving any more OS-updates, only security-updates and even those will end soon. It's really quite annoying as the hardware is more than perfectly well and good and I have no reason, whatsoever, to get a new phone other than keeping up-to-date on the security-updates.

I suppose I'll look into Nokia's phones next. They ship with more-or-less stock-Android without all the extra crap Samsungs and LGs and the likes insist putting there, and they ship updates on a frequent basis.

My S10+ is on Pie, and my LG G7+ ThinQ is on Oreo (I think I should get one more upgrade for the latter) while my Samsung Tab S2 is Nougat.....my S10+ is gonna have to last at least 1.5 to 2 years as I wait for folding phone technology to become cheaper and more reliable.

I had an iPhone 6S for two years and I went from iOS 9/10 all the way to iOS 12, and all at the same time as my friends with iPhones would get their OS updates too, it was a great time.

iPhones are unbelievably resilient for how many software updates they get, minus if Apple intentionally slows them down...

Apple spoilt me with OS updates so much that I feel potentially my next phone would be a Google Pixel once they amend the notch situation, or else an iPhone in the future.

It's arguably one of the big reasons why I'm an iPhone user, as much as I enjoy using some Android phones.

When you think about it, it's ridiculous what's considered normal in Android land: two years of general OS updates at best, vendors only have to provide four security updates per year at most, and your choice of phone may prevent you from getting even those upgrades.  There's a kind of class system where the flagship phone might get the two years of updates, but the budget phone might be stuck with its shipping Android version for all eternity.

And the kicker is that Apple has actually made its operating systems run faster on older devices lately, rather than letting it bog them down.  The only software reason you might have to replace an iPhone 5s is because Apple will likely draw the line at iOS 13, six years later.

Exactly, I could not have said it better than you. Apple does it undeniably better that the pull to the dark side is far too great. I only ever buy flagships or midranges for Android and they're always slow to reach me.

The premium pricetag on iPhones mainly goes towards the software, I feel.
