In December, I got a 500GB SSD for Christmas and wiped my 250GB SSD that I was using. Well, I've been hearing a lot about Linux and how it's better for gaming than it used to be, thing is without gaming I would just bail on Windows all together. But I'm nervous so I wanna set up a dual boot Linux/Windows 10 setup. Is this a good idea? What should I know? What Distro works best for gaming? Any tips are appreciated!

In case it affects anything I run a Ryzen 2700x with Vega 64 on a X470 MSI Carbon MOBO.

Why nervous? just do it, it won't hurt.

I suggest 500gb for the windows, 256gb for the linux.

Ryzen 5700g @ 4.4ghz all cores | Asrock B550M Steel Legend | 3060 | 2x 16gb Micron E 2666 @ 4200mhz cl16 | 500gb WD SN750 | 12 TB HDD | Deepcool Gammax 400 w/ 2 delta 4000rpm push pull | Antec Neo Eco Zen 500w

Running Vega probably helps because AMD has better Linux drivers

Asrock 890GX Extreme 3 - AMD Phenom II X4 955 @3.50GHz - Arctic Cooling Freezer XTREME Rev.2 - 4GB Kingston HyperX - AMD Radeon HD7850 - Kingston V300 240GB - Samsung Spinpoint F3 1TB - Chieftec APS-750 - Cooler Master HAF912 PLUS

You should make sure you can actually run the games you want to play on Linux before you spend the time to move to it.

https://lutris.net/ - a front end for wine configs. You can use this for stuff that doesn't come through steam.

https://www.protondb.com/ - if you got the game on steam, use this to see if your game is supported / working.

I bring this up because some games like PUBG will not work unless you virtualize a windows install and use it to game. Which kind of defeats the purpose of switching in the first place.

Also understand that you may not be able to get all the cool new games at the same time as your friends. The game may have a linux native version. It may work with Proton. It might need a winecfg. Or, it might have some crappy DRM that will break it forever.

As far distro's go, I think Ubuntu and maybe Arch work well. I would recommend Ubuntu since you seem pretty new to Linux, and Ubuntu has a bunch of easily searchable answers to common questions.

Gamer Thinking About Switching To Linux

Why? What do you not like about Windows that you think would be better on Linux?

Ryzen 1600x @4GHz

Asus GTX 1070 8GB @1900MHz

16 GB HyperX DDR4 @3000MHz

Asus Prime X370 Pro

Samsung 860 EVO 500GB

Noctua NH-U14S

Seasonic M12II 620W

+ four different mechanical drives.

I'm not sure if it was Linus but i watched a whole video contributed to Linux gaming.. if i'm correct then there should be a new piece of software on the market you could use with the games not ment for Linux in your steam account which works mighty fine.... so hop come out of your comfort zone and don't forget to share your new experience with us to affraid to try

I'd recommend you dual boot and try linux before anything on your 256gb ssd. Yes, linux has got much better at gaming but there is lack of support for a lot of games, and it hasn't reached or surpassed windows yet. I'd still recommend you try it for yourself to make your own opinion but for now I will stay on windows for a while perhaps until linux gets on top of windows with performance

Na. Linux is still a joke. I tried it on the back of the LTT videos with Wendell, and the whole thing was a sh*t show. Nothing installed properly, everything was more hassle than was mentioned in the videos, and most importantly, nothing actually worked! Linux is still a joke, don't believe the hype.
