good day guys,, i have a sapphire hd6950 2gb refference card(now running as a 6970), I've noticed that it's now overheating, i cannot play crysis 3 ar battlefield 3 now because the games keeps on crashing, I've tried running kumbustor and it's also crashing, i"m not having BSOD though, ran gpu-z and noticed that there's a huge difference between the temperatures on gpu 1,2 and 3. I've tried to change the grease on the gpu chip, and i have the same result

I don't know what to do know. please help, need your experts ideas guy.... please.....

sorry guys can't upload the gpu-z but @ idle

gpu#1 is @ 69 degrees

gpu#2 is @ 99.5 degrees

gpu#3 is @ 101 degrees,

vrm temp is 42.2 degrees

and everytime the gpu 3 reaches 145 to 150 degrees everything will crash.

tbh reference coolers are terrible but not that bad try relocating GPU1 at the place of GPU3 and see if that GPU overheats also i never saw a gpu reaching 150 degrees

as levent said,if it rose above the limit for those cards, pretty sure like 105C, it would

-soon kill the gpu

-throttle down to protect it from damage

-display driver error in order to stop any load on the gpu in order to let it cool down.

if your gpu is reaching 140-150C then consider adding some high cfm fans to your case to add airflow,an aftermarket heatsink, and make sure fan is constantly on 100%.

Reaching higher than 100C would soon destroy your gpu and the game crashes because the gpu down clocks in order to make the gpu cooler. Try switching your gpu in different slots to see if you have a temperature difference. Are you having enough airflow in your case? What is your ambient temperature?

Yes, make sure you have decent free flowing air moving across those GPU's, either from the front of the case and the side of the case.

here's a link to my pc,

i have a 140cm fan at the front to push air in and 120 cm for the rad and top exaust fan

i don't think my gpu struggles for air because most of the time i am using it without the side panel

also i just checked your psu and people seem to call it junk maybe it your psu that is overfeeding your cards ? try with another psu

@Levent

i dont have 2nd and 3rd gpu, i dont even know why the gpu-z shows that i have 3 gpu's, but looking around the net, all of the 6950 users have that kind of result.

"maybe" there are 3 gpu's inside the single chip of the 6950

my brother have a silverstone strider600w, i had same results...

no there is no card with 3 gpu in the market , i think you should switch to original bios using the switch on the card while system was off and see if you still have 3 gpu's showing up in your gpuz

If you really can't change your card, I suggest an aftermarket cooler, since your card is stock. Use a liquid aftermarket cooler if you're going to overclock.

Build: Fx-8120@4.1ghz,  Gtx770@1.0ghz,  16gb Patriot memory,  Cheap case from thermaltake

Change the fan profile settings. 85°C and fan speed at 38% ..that's too low

This, it's waaaaaaay off. Run it with standard settings (you bought a 6950 not a 6970, dead with it), judging from your postings in this thread it doesn't sound to me like you're too comfortable in the world of overclocking (or say "not so standard configs"), so for you it's better to just not touch it at all. If you are not 100% comfortable with applying TIM, check a guide or two out and see if you did it correctly. As for the whole stock versus aftermarket cooler discussion there is some truth to this but in no shape or form as much as some users claim. The stock cooler is perfectly adequate for cooling the GPU, although often noisier and warmer than aftermarket coolers, but never the less perfectly adequate.

hi hans.... I am running it on stock settings, I dont Overclock it. i know the image i showed was running on 6970 but it was done by changing on the bios, and i dont know if i should consider it overclocking it, i dont even know how to overclock it, it's purely on it's stock setting even if i run it on the 6950 bios the temps are bit lower maybe about 5 to 10 degrees lower.

I think you should get a tube of mx-4. and clean and reapply the thermal paste on there. it might help.

try not to overclock the gpu and try to set a fan curve on.. who cares about the noise. just keep the gpu alive.

hi.. I already replaced the thermal paste but not with mx-4, I used thermaltake tg-2, I replaced it several times try with different amounts, from thin to covered the whole chip up to a blob of thermal paste, I'm now trying to play crysis 3 with the fan @ 48 percent, it's a bit loud but the gpu temp is @ 90 deg. i might try pushing it a bit more

Did you try setting a fan curve in order to adjust the fan speeds when it is on load and to probably get better temps? Did you clean the dust in your gpu?
